new to ocing, please help

Hey, i'm thinking about doing a first time overclock but i need some help. There's two things that im not sure how to do so I came to the pros.

  1. How do i make the 'mirror finish' i hear so much about?
    I'm going to be using a copper thermaltake silent boost as my heatsink, and i want to make the best contact possible. Any personal tricks or methods are greatly appreciated.
  2. Where can a find a good, natively english, guide to unlock a 1.4ghz athlon xp 1700+?
    Heres a link to the proc im running. If anyone has pics or a useful guide to help me overclock this processor, please post them.
 
its much easier to unlock by joining pins... link the pins either on the chip itself or on the underside of the motherboard, i just got a piece of copper from a multistrand cable and put it in the female cpu socket on the motherboard between the two specific holes http://www.lostcircuits.com/cpu/amd_unlock/1a.shtml

if your cpu is a palamino you should think about getting a new one before you bother going for a clock, they arent the most efficient chips so dont expect anything good... post the cpu stepping here if you cant tell the difference, its the white-on-black numbers on the top of the chip... if you have managed to get a chip with dlt3c and jiuhb/jiucb on it you can clock up to 2.5ghz with the right cooling, psu, motherboard and ram but if you are using air cooling you cant expect to get that high without a large amount of fan noise

Awesom, thanks for all the great links. I'm getting my mobo on tuesday, ill be able to find my stepping code then. I dont want to deal with taking off and putting on my heatsink again (already did it a few days ago) just to do it tomorrow for the third time. Is it ok if I pm you guys if i need some help with it?
