I've decided to buy a completely new system months from now when the Conroe or next generation CPU's come out. Until then I've been messing around with my current setup trying to learn the in and outs of overclocking. As of now my setup is:
3.4 Prescott 200x17
Gigabyte Micro-Atx
4 512mb 400 mhz DDR 3200
X850 xt pe 256mb
My CPU had some issues with throttling so I ordered a new ALPHA S-PAL8952M81 which so far is a beast. It runs at 4000 rpm's and has lowered my CPU temperature from 55 idle to 27 idle. Being that my processor has such a powerful fan on it I thought I might take this time to do a bit of CPU oc'ing.
So I went into Bios and raised the MHZ from 200x17 to 225x17 converting the chip from a 3.4GHZ to a 3.82GHZ. The temperatures now hover around 33 idle and a little more under load. I'm imaging theres room for improvement in this department based on these temps?
So the ram is giving me the problems. As far as I can tell theres nowhere in Bios to manually reconfigure the FSB speed. I'm using CMOS f5 and have checked everywhere including the CNTRL+F1 menu. All i can find is "Set Memory Frequency for" which has the RAM FSB under it grayed out and inaccessible. This motherboard from what I've heard is one of the best micro-atx OC'ing boards so it's most definately my inexperience to blame.
Anyway the "Memory Frequency For" tab regulates the "Memory Frequency(mhz)" (directly under it but inacecssible) and the options for it are:
Auto
2.0 (Chances Memory Frequency to 450 which seems like it would be a match for a FSB running at 225 mhz)
1.66 (Changes Mem Freq to 374)
1.33 (299)
Auto sets itself at 1.66 and as far as I can tell they are the same. I'm thinking I need to adjust it to 2.0 to get synchronous operation for FSB speeds but...
From what I've heard having ram operating at a lower SPD is better, so 2.0 is actually the worst?
Also judging by my processor temperatures would it be safe to go any further? If so wouldn't the limiting factor be my slow 400 mhz ram?
I also adjusted my AGP aperture size from 128mb to 256mb considering I've got 2 gigs of ram and a decent video card. Is this optimal?
-Thanks in advance.
