i've got Mandrake Linux 10.0 installed on a 950MHz Duron that's begging to fold...

i d/led the client, chmod +x it, put all the files into a folder called "FoldingAtHome4" and then double-clicked the FAH4Console-Linux.exe file

and it's like, Create an Association!

so i tried to chmod it, but it didn't work...

btw, i don't have any user accts (whoops) so i'm logged on as root..what to do?! it keeps telling me i should create a user acct, b/c having root in a desktop environment is dangerous, b/c "nothing can stop you."

Well, to make a user, I suggest you read up on useradd.

Code:
man useradd

I'm assuming you're using a file browser like Konqueror or Nautilus, and the "Create an Association" thing means that the system has no idea what to use to run the .exe binary, and you have to tell it what to use to execute it.

I don't use file managers though, I just run Foldingathome client from the command line.

First try the directions
"To launch: To use this program, make sure that you can execute it (chmod +x FAH4Console-Linux.exe) and then run it ./FAH4Console-Linux.exe"
Command line Linux used to be like DOS.

Those who run as root will crash and burn, but sometimes you can walk away.

i tried that; read the first post ;)
it won't work.

Carnival Forces, did you actually try running from the command line, not just through Nautilus. In your OP I didn't read anything about you running it from command line (which would not make it spit out an association message either).

Start up xterm/gnome term/whatever, cd to path/to/FAH, and then
Code:
./FAH whatever the name was

the ./ is important.

i went to the little equivelent of a "Start" button (can't quite see it, the old monitor i'm using is reeeeeeally screwed up), hit "Run Comamnd"

and typed:

./FAH4Console-Linux.exe

it didn't work. it was like "can't find it" or something...

THEN, i tried using Nautilus to run it; and it was like "Association!"

sry for obfuscation

That explains it.

The Run command thing is typically only for system wide binary executables found in /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, /usr/local/bin, /opt/bin...

typing in ./FAHConsole.exe won't do anything because FAHConsole is not in the path.

Like I said, open up a terminal, change directories to where you put the thing, and execute the command when you're in the actual directory.

yeah, i created a new acct then d/l'd F@H and what-not; it seems to run fine now...however...my monitor doesn't! It doesn't even display anything! I'm guessing it's on "power-saving mode" right now...I've tried another monitor, same deal; it'll work for a while; and then all - of - a - sudden *bam*: Blank Screen...i can't resume it either; so i have to restart the box :(

any suggestions?

Carnival Forces, the monitor turning off thing happened to me, and I believe I fixed it like this:

edit the file /etc/X11/XF86Config (or /etc/X11/xorg.conf) and look for the section called module. You have to tell it not to load the xfree-dga extension.

Code:
Section "Module"
....
# This loads the miscellaneous extensions module, and disables
# initialisation of the XFree86-DGA extension within that module.
    [b]SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension
    EndSubSection[/b]
...
EndSection

all right, i'll try that; but this happens even when i'm not in Linux, like if i'm just cruising the BIOS; and i can't find any option in the BIOS that'll fix it.

i have an AMD Duron 950MHz
Some Crap ECS Mainboard
and an ATi Radeon 7000 (PCI card)

Hmm, random occurences of monitors going into standby mode have happened to me, though I haven't had it happen to me lately. I heard it was a problem with ATi drivers, though it also has happened to me when booting a comp, so I really don't know.
