New to Intel...

The last time I used an Intel board and proc is with my Asus TUSI-M and 1ghz Celeron (of which I still have both).

The problem that I am having now is that I found a P4 3.06/512/533 SL6S5 MALAY (at least that is what it says on the top of the CPU), but the motherboard that it is on is bad ( Intel D845PEBT2), so I need a new motherboard. (at least I think it is the motherboard...when I turn it on I get nothing, no beeps, no bios screen, nothing...)

That is where my problem is, I have no idea what one to get? I don't need a fancy one for overclocking 'cause I don't do that (I know, I know). So I just need one with AGP and maybe (big MAYBE) SATA. I don't wan't to go over $80 either.

Is there one out there? Is there one out there without SATA that is around $50?

I am lost in the Land of Intel. :(
 
It looks like you've got a socket 478 chip.

I'd reccomend the Intel 875 chipset. It's absolutely fantastic.

go check out the Abit IC7-G max2 advance mobo. It's kept me happy, and an easy overclocker.

the max3 is impossible to find, where as the max2 is quite common.
 
Yeah, sorry about that...it is indeed a s478.

Also, what P4 do I have ? I went to the Intel site and was confused by this:

Cause it says a P4 with 512k and 533 bus only goes to 2.80ghz. The left side says a P4 3.06ghz 512k only is made with a 800mhz bus.

I am lost cause the one I have says P4 3.06/512/533 SLS5 MALAY L303A712-0986.

I took your advise and looked for one with a 875 chipset, but I am lost to as if this Foxconn supports my proc or not?

That looks like a nice board. I hear good things about Foxcon stuff. Actually they make several components on the IC7 boards as well.

Just make sure your DDR RAM is compatable. That intel board accepts 266/333 memory, where the Foxconn accepts 333/400 memory.

I can't be certain but it doesn't sound like you have a P4C chip (Hyper-threadding).

The proc is a pull from a VPR Matrix computer and the Intel label on the front bezel of the computer has the orange H and orange T on it. So I am still confused. I will do some googling to see if I can get a solid view on it.


Now I just need to figure out if the Foxconn supports it.

Boy am I a dummy! I was looking at the Foxconn site for supported CPU's and was looking at the left hand side as if they were the CPU model numbers!

I am stupid!

The Foxconn does support it!

Thanks for you help fore1337, I never would have found the Foxconn if you didn't suggest the chipset. :D

I am getting new ram for it, as the system I pulled it from only had one stick of 512mb pc2700.
 
Update*

I got it all working.

So for $45 I have a system that looks like this

3.06ghz
1.5gb PC2700 ram (found another ram stick at the same spot as the computer-only 4 days later)
2x120gb hard drive (after I erased the porn and Quicken records off of it- The person that had this should have stuck to his/her business rather than the pornography-some people are weird)
SBLIVE!
FX5200 AGP

I'll I had to do was format the HDDs and replace the mobo!

Cool eh? Now My dad has a new computer. :)
 
looks like you put together a nice web surfing compy.

That FX5200 GPU also has superb video playback capability. :D
 
the 3.06 proc you have is a good find. the 3.06 is the highest speed 533 proc. It is also the first HT Cpu. the proc will go for about 150-175 on the bay. It is the Fastest chip you can put into an 845pe chipset.

The Board out of the VPR is an intel Blue mountain board. The Bad news is its an OEM version that should have the IDE raid Rather than The SATA raid the the retail version has.


The other bad news is you probely wont be able to update the bios past ver P06 since it was an oem board. the bios is up to P10
 
Your right...it had the IDE raid.

So I replaced it with some Asrock board that was $45 and had all the features that my dad needed, except for firewire...but he doesn't need that and when he does...he can get an add in card.

Very cool find, the 3.06 is a great chip !
Go look at the prices on eBay, you'll see it sells for a higher price.
They also over clock really well, if you get the itch
