Okay so I no nothing about this but downloaded and installed the application. Have it running in the background (or so I think) Setup name "ninethreeeleven" team number "33" is that right?
It just shows what its doing when I click on the icon in the task bar. What else is there to it? If all of this has been covered please link to the right thread.

EDIT: okay so I pull up my taskmanger and look at preformance... which is at 100% with nothing running but this browser window and the folding app. If say I want ot use a memory stealing program like Paintshop Pro or play some games, what do you guys recommend? Shut this down and how? I dont know if I will end up loosing some of the information or does it auto save (remember I have no idea how this works)...
Also I just set it up the way it came. Didn't change anything in the choices, just did the "recommended" install. Is there things I should change or what?
Sorry for all the questions, this seems to all be for a great cause, and I am glad to help but still will need my computer for myself sometimes.

folding runs at lowest priority. as soon as you start doing something that needs cycles, it'll let that program have it.

as far as the setup, yes that's all there was to it.

to put it in a slightly different way, even the keyboard and mouse get a higher priority than the folding program. I would bet money that you can leave it running all the time and you'll never notice (because that's the whole point...for it to be unobtrusive)

Yup, well said. Folding can run even if your gaming..or doing what ever. :D

Welcome aboard ninethreeeleven, fold on.

What happens if it crashs. Does the data (cycle) start again from the start, or does it know where it was.

It has checkpoints in case the box crashes.
Depending on you system you'll start to see results in a couple of days.

You can type you name in here to see how you're doing or got to the hardfolding.com page to check the stats.

good question; i'm assuming you have the graphical client for windows. Right-click the red-cog in your systray, then click Configure... Under the Advanced tab (i think) slide the checkpoint slider to 3 minutes. This way, it will save its progress every 3 minutes :).

good luck, and welcome to the [H]orde.

Welcome to the [H]orde, 9311. Worst case scenario. Rig folding for 4 or more hours, with no interaction from you. You wake up, get home, whatever, and try to log onto the net, Firefox may say attempting to resolve host, continuously. I have this on 2 of 3 folding rigs. Reboot, and all is good. I'm on a rather high speed cable connection, so dial up folks may never see this problem. No data corruption occurs, even with 5 drives running RAID0. A very few programs can screw up you're folding. Pause F@H when you run HDTach, Defrag, RegistryDefrag and a few others. No biggie, right click on F@H icon and select pause. Do what you gotta, then resume work in F@H. I'm sure the experience varies from rig to rig, but it's all good. The main thing is that we all fold.

Okay, w00t!!! 2 WU!!!!! I am teh king!

Anyway... score 211 whats this? and why the 2 WU and 211, while some have 211 and 54 WU?
And I'm working on 266, some protien thing I cannot understand.
I haven't noticed any problems with processor sharing (I played Tribes a bunch since starting this, and on one server I would just lock up, I could change guns, but not shoot not fly and not jump) Left server and all was well.

WU = work unit = a packet of work on a particular protein
POINTS = points earned for completing a WU
Different WU's are worth Different points, some are worth more b/c they require more work, others are worth less b/c they require less work. That's why people can have similar points and a drastically different number of WU's completed.

sounds like that was the server's problem...yay! :)

Fold On!

Hi guys, I have met relic just yesterday, it was a pleasure to meet and talk to you, relic.

I am very new to folding, never heard of it or know what it is.
I have a few questions though:
Where do I get the program to fold? does it cost me anything to start out? Since I live in Cincinnati, will I be assigned to a certain team? what are the minimum system specs or max to run folding? And is it ok to run folding from a wireless network card? Will the folding @home program run on Windows 2003 server?

I figure Relic told you all about the quad xeon I am modding, low end P3 xeon machine not the high end P4 models.

Q&A

Where do I get the program to fold?

You can get the client at http://folding.stanford.edu

does it cost me anything to start out?

Nope, just your CPU time, it is a donation on your part to help humanity.

Since I live in Cincinnati, will I be assigned to a certain team?

No, you decide the team you want to participate in. The [H]ardOCP team is team 33. You will be prompted for team numbe

what are the minimum system specs or max to run folding?

There are really no minimum specs, if you are folding on a really slow machine, say less than 500mhz, you can request the no time line option.

And is it ok to run folding from a wireless network card?

Yes, it is fine to run on a wireless network card, F@H only uses bandwidth to recieve the core and to send and recieve work units.

Welcome to Folding at Home, I hope you will Fold of the [H]orde (Team 33).

if I log out, or use the 'sleep' button on my keyboard, will this program still be running?

If you log out or sleep, it will still be running if you have folding at home installed as a service. You can do that either with the new 5.0 command line clients, or with an addon program like firedaemon.

I believe, though I could be wrong, that programs etc that are NOT services dont continue running after you log off etc.

yeah, i'm pretty sure you're right.

Ok guys I have a Hyperthreading computer, please let me know if I did this correctly.

I downloaded the client, I have two HD partitions and have made folders on both drives, named FoldingHT1 and FoldingHT2, I have started the client in the first folder, went through setting the system ID on the first partition 1, and so on. I have done the same also on the second folder, but setting the system ID to 2. Both clients in the folders are set as a service.

I have the console and graphical client, how do I do the -local switch, do I do it in the console or someplace else?
What is the command line I should type to get this to run two instances?

Scorp.

Just to be sure that you understood our conversation, you simply type the switches after the executable name.

ie. "<console program name>.exe -local"

If you are running it as a shortcut in your startup folder then you simply add the "-local" switch to the executable name.

If you are running as a service then you will need to edit the registry, there's a how-to around here somewhere but if you can't find it, I'll post it again.

Oh sorry Relic, I forgot to tell everyone I suffer from a learning disability, so I am very to slow understand what your talking about, but give me some time I should understand. When I saw you relic, I was to afraid to say this, so I kept it to myself. And no one feel guilty of this, I have to get through it on my own.

No sweat, Scorp.
You'll do fine. If you need additional help, you'll certainly find a lot of people here willing to assist. Don't ever be afraid to ask.

It's a team and you're a part of it. :D

Ok I have tried to type in the -local switch, but it keeps popping up saying I can't name the file or something. I tried to create a shortcut and add the -local switch, then I got the same popup saying the same thing.

I have only messed with the registry to delete spyware out of my system, please help me out someone.

I will delete the folders and start over, if that is what it takes.

try deletion / re-installation.

I have deleted the whole folders, placed the client back into the folders.

Ok here is where I have the client C:\Folding HT1 and for the second client D:\Folding HT2

I go to the start, run menu, browse, then to the folder Folding HT1. I try to type in FAH502-Console -local. A popup says file not found, Verify that the correct File given and then I am stumped of how to get any farther.

I try right click and rename it with the -local switch, but double clicking on it opens up the console.

ah, you're doing it wrong ;)

browse to C:\Folding HT1 and edit the FAH502.exe file (by default it is named winFAH.exe, if you have to, rename it to FAH500). After the file path, which will be "C:\FAH502.exe" (WITH the quotation marks), this is what your entire line should look like:
"C:\FAH502.exe" -config
if you execute the file w/ that flag, you will be able to configure it, after you finish configuring it, it should look like this:
"C:\FAH502.exe" -local -verbosity 9 -forceSSE -advmethods -forceasm

good luck, remember, there IS a space after the closing quotation mark.

EDIT: just re-read your post. Stop by the FAQ, it explains how to use EMIII and FireDaemon to make the window go away.

Thanks that explains it much better, I was getting confused, but now I'm on the right track.

good, post back w/ the average time it takes for you to crunch WU's :)

It has taken me about 5 days to crunch 2 WU's, running two instances on my HT machine, my score is now 48. Is this the average time to get WU's?
I can't leave on my computer only for at least two days and my pc needs a rest for a day.

My father is paying for the electricity bill, so I will try to not exceed two days leaving the PC on and he fussing with me asking me why I have a pc on all day, you see money is very tight in the household.

ah, yes. Money often does pose a problem w/ folding and electricit issues :(

as for your times, sry, can't help you there, everything is AMD at my house (except for the family Dell  )

Hmmm, something sounds seriously wrong.... What are the specs on the computer? I just installed F@H on a clients 800 MHZ spitfire duron, and to fold a 20 point Gromacs (Gromacs are not AMD friendly) it takes 14 hours. So theroetically in 5 days it will Fold 8.57 Work Units for about 171 points.

What other processes are eating up CPU time? It really sounds like something is wrong, and/or FAH is not getting significant CPU time.

Just to let you know, I use this computer as my gaming rig also, only play diablo, do graphics, autoCAD and typing on Microsoft Word. I don't overclock my PC, tried once but failed to OC it.

Here are the specs:

Intel 2.4ghz processor with HT enabled
Soyo P4 lite MB
256mb Micron DDR2100
60GB HD
100mb zip drive
Liteon 52x24x52 CDRW drive
16x DVD drive

I have set 2 instances for the HT processor.

I may have crap for specs, but for the money I paid I got a good setup for a person that has budget constraints. I usually keep my CPU% to about 25 or 35 percent. And it is running Windows 2003 Server, I have turned off alot of services though, so I saved some CPU time.

As for my computers in the basement, here is where it gets interesting: one dual P3 866mhz computer, one Dual P3 Xeon 500mhz, one Quad P3 Xeon box- underconstruction, one Proliant 800 dual Pentium Pros at 200mhz- offline needs more memory, one HP Netserver LC3- setup as domain controller at 350mhz.

Good to see another from the Cincy Area! I live in No.KY, myself. Personally, I am partaking in the UD DC project, but glad to see you on the Folding team. I wish I had joined the [H]orde long ago. It's a bloody shame the 150,000 points from my previous work will always only count for my personal stats. Oh well, time to look to the future...

Get that rig up and running...

I am up to 7wu's now since I talked with you all. Last time I checked I had a score of 415 or something close. Been working on learning remote desktop, got it figured out for now. However I usually have two computers running with folding at home 3-5days.

But my dual P3 machine is giving me headaches, the wireless card has given me troubles lately. I have just pinned it down to a faulty wireless card, the dlink won't play fair with my Linksys ap, and Belkin wireless cards. just getting on my network with this one machine, will just about drive my other computers nuts. Hey my P3 is crunching frames like crazy, even with a pci wireless card problem.

I'm still working on my mod box, the key is to work slow on it to make it look good. I love to draw, so some of my drawings are being spray painted on my case. The case has the feel of a egyptian style. Hieroglyphics are going on the side of the case, I found a font in word that allows me to write the hieroglyphic writing.

Well I have found a job, I start Monday, work a week and maybe be perm. A computer rollout for an finacial place. They got new pc's and need someone to take them out of the box, setup and hook them up to the network. Also install the software on each of the computers. If any of my writing is misspelled, I'm excited that I start a job monday.
This job doesn't change much, I will still fold for team 33, but now I can save up for more hardware on my mod box.

Good luck today on your first day @ your new job! :)

Thanks Papa-ming! Well this is tuesday and the new job is still going great. I am learning day by day of more experience to help out the marketing director / IT support person.
For today, the day dragged slow, It took me two hours to install windows 2000 pro on a computer. Why it took me that long, it was on a computer running a p2 300mhz with only 128mb of sdram memory. 1 hour to format and 1 hour to install the os.

Here was the strange part after I took a hd out of a system to this system to transfer files over, I asked what we were going to do with the computer with the mb problems. He told me that he was going to throw it out. I looked at it, it had a processor, a 52x cd drive, and memory. He let me take the socket 370 processor and cd drive, so I got something out of it before he pitched, oh he took the memory out of it to upgrade the memory on the working system. Well the sister company of this company closed, so we have more pc equipment to sort through.

Well see you guys tomorrow, at late night again. I still have running the folding@home client going on my machine and maybe I'll let one of Dually servers run the client tonight.

Welcome!
Not sure on the mobo, but that PC2100 most likely is your bottleneck - hard to crank up the FSB with that PC3200 is rated at 200Mhz I think the 2100 is 133 (IIRC)
