New to Folding.

I just wanted to say Hi, and ask a couple questions.
Sitting at work yesterday (it was very slow) I started doing some research on the Folding projects, I didn't realize all the great research that comes from this. My grandmother is in late stages of Alzheimer's, and its frustrating knowing that medical science can't do anything to help!
I decided that I wanted to get involved and contribute what I can to the project. After I got home, (and several beers later) I managed to get the SMP MPICH version client up and running along with the GPU client.
The SMP client was acting strange so I did some digging and I found that the ProtoMol WU is running. I tried clearing everything and started over several times. Once I got an A0 WU, I reinstalled the client and got a ProtoMol again! I just gave up and let it run.

Anyway, my equipment is in the sig. Does anyone have any advice on how to be more productive using the equipment I have?
I have it running 24/7 and its not used for much. My son is using it to game for maybe hour a day, I use it to browse, light gaming, and photo editing. So probably its spending 19 hours a day idle.
Also, I have an older Dell inspiron 9300 laptop that's sitting in the closet. Pentium M 2.0ghz and a Nvidia go 6800. Would that computer be worth using to fold? And what clients would I want to run on it? I could probably dedicate that to folding 90% of the time.

Re A0 WU: make sure you set the flag -advmethods for your SMP client (and get a passkey from Stanford for A3 bonus points).

Re: Nv 6800 - that generation GPU is not compatible with the GPU client.

You'll probably have to run the classic CPU clients on the rest but every bit helps

I got the passkey yesterday, and I set -advmethods. I don't remember exact settings, I wouldn't be able to say until I get home.

make sure you also have the -smp flag. if you don't have that you will get single core units such as protomol based WU
 
Welcome to the team. I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother, but that is one of the diseases the folks at Stanford are trying to find out more about.

If you plan on running the classic uniprocessor client on your old laptop, you may want to turn down cpu utilization to keep the temperatures down. When I fold a work unit on my laptop, I usually set it to 55-60% cpu utilization to keep temps down.
 
So let me get this straight... I'm looking forward to hot crowded rooms, sky high power bills? LOL thats nothing new to me! I'm already finding the PPD and scores to be a challenge. I'm sure I'm going to be looking at ways to increase production.

Now I want to find out who to talk to at my company. We have close to 280 Optiplex 980's and a few Precision N series that run 24/7 Oo.
Just a dream, there is no way corporate would open up their wallets for anything.

I'll experiment with the laptop after work. I'll probably follow the advice given and watch temps closely.

It seems like there is a lot of decent people here, I don't feel uncomfortable asking questions.

What you will find is that there are a LOT of class-act awesome people here. I am new to folding myself, and you have no idea how awesome these folks have been at helping me with all of the typical noobie questions I had. Their dedication even inspired me to put together a dedicated 24/7 folding rig, and it was them that helped me put together a rig that maximizes production based on electricity used. When you see people who are this into folding, and do it for the right reasons, it makes you feel good about supporting a cause like this. I started out just casually folding work units on my laptop with a Turion II X2 Ultra 2.5ghz processor that averages 400ppd. Now i'm averaging 22k ppd with my i7 rig.

If you wish to borg your work workstations, make sure to get written permission from the highest level people as people have lost their jobs due to this. I imagine most companies wouldn't be too enthusiastic about using their resources and electricity.

If you want to monitor cpu temperatuers, I use Core Temp as it is the cleanest and easiest to read in my opinion.
 
Welcome to the team... :D Looks like a lot has been covered already, but I just wanted to reinforce the fact that there is a lot of great advice and friendly people here to help out. That's one of the factors that makes the [H]orde such a great place to be, and a great team to fold for. While we're a varied and opinionated bunch, when it comes to folding you won't find a tighter knit community to be involved with.

But once again...nice to have you on board with us!

Go over it and make sure you have every step right, and if you still aren't getting SMP units, remove the client and follow through the guide start to finish. If you have any more troubles, feel free to post in that thread and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Following your guide I did get the SMP client running correctly. It loaded an A3 core like it should.
Since everyone (including me) loves pictures, I'll upload some of my rig.

This is where I lapped the Heatsink and CPU. If you notice, its still not making 100% contact, even with lapping, I never could get the heatsink perfect. Due to the heatpipes I didn't want to take much surface off, regardless it made a big difference.

It hasn't updated yet, I've broke 11k ppd using new GTX275.
I'm going to get 68ohm resistors today to get the 9600gt up and folding as well. (I'm worried that my crappy Raidmax 630 psu can handle the extra load)

My kilawatt meter is showing 345 watts being pulled with the SMP and 1 GPU client running.

I'm thinking I can get 15k ppd out of this thing. Its looking to be about the limit running a dual core.
 
Upgrade PSU first.....

Better to make 11k ppd than have the whole system down.

^^ This, especially as a PSU that goes can also take other things with it. Save some pennies and get a nice corsair, antec, seasonic or similar of about 650w
