New to Dual CPU

Hey guys... sorry long time no post... college and real life get in the way sometimes...

ANYWAY, I got a sweet deal on a Compaq Proliant 3000...

2xP2 450 Cpu's
2GB ECC reg PC-100
3x18.6 wide-SCSI drives in raid...

Getting about 3 more of these machines, and I wanted to know what the fastest cpu I can stuff in there would be. I don't have ANY experience with Dual CPU boxen, but I know I'd like to get P3 CPU's in there. Google hasn't helped me any, and I have the CPU's lying around, so I'm turning to you for help.



P.S. Definately wanna get off the casualty list. I got more boxen than I know what to do with right now... but it's going to be some time before I can throw it up on the DC FS/FT list, THX.
 
what mobo is in that computer?

Are you sure it supports P3's?

Are the P3's that you have the same speed? and hopefuly close in the Stepping as well?
 
It's a Compaq Mobo, for the life of me I can't find any distingushing marks or parn #'s on it.

Unfortunately, I don't know IF it supports P3's but they have a Proliant 6/600 on compaq's website and it has 2 600's in there.

No the P3's I have are 600's, but not the same stepping. But the P2's in it aren't the same stepping... so I guess it don't matter too much.

It's set for 4.5x100 right now... so if I pop the P3's in there, do you think it will work fine, but at 450mhz?
 
they dont need to be the SAME, Usually the Closer they are, the ess hasles they will give you wile running SMP :)

what Model p3's are they? P3 600E/EB's? FCPGA? or Slot 1?
 
I believe that 600mhz is the max that you can put into these proliants, a word of warning, they take only but matched set of 600mhz processors.

Why do I say this, I have this Proliant 1600 with one 400mhz, I have a second processor of different stepping but same speed and the OS will Not see both processors. Neither will the Smartstart Utility software I got from Compaq, both OS and utility will only see 1 Processor, not 2. I tried changing the Hal, no worky.

No matched set, No work, simple as that.

They won't take the slocket, slot 1 to socket 370 boards, I done tried that, it don't work.The proliant 3000 never had socket, they always had slot. Compaq has an option to take this server to 4-way smp operation, but looking at prices, you are better off staying dual processors.

There is likely going to be problem, a 600EB is 133MHz FSB. I doubt greatly that your ProLiant will support processors beyond a 100MHz FSB, so you'd likely need two 100MHz FSB P3 CPU's, probably 600E's or just plain 600's.

From what I can see on HP/Compaq's website the max CPU supported with their final BIOS is 600MHz.
