so i got the canon t4i with 18-55mm lens.

to be honest i know nothing about a dslr camera, but i have been reading a ton!! i have a few questions though.

1 - what speed memory card to i need? i picked up a 30mb scandisk and it seems to be fine. would a faster memory card offer any advantages? i need to buy another one anyway. im running cs5.1 with the latest camera raw plugin.

2 - i cant get photoshop to open the .cr2 files. do i have to convert them to .dng files to open them in photoshop?

3 - i was thinking about picking up a second lens? what to get?

For memory card, the faster the better, especially if you plan on doing video IMO.
I don't know for number 2, I use lightroom for my first step of PP and have no issues there.
For your last one - why do you want a 2nd lens already?
 
get a class 10 32gb sd card and you wont need anything more for storage unless you shoot gigs.

If you want to get some of the focal lengths covered you can grab a 75-300mm for telephoto, or a 50mm if you want to get some bokeh.
 
well i am going to be going to hawaii in the summer and i planned on taking a ton of pics (kinda the reason i got the camera). i feel like i am going to need something with more of a zoom to get the landscapes.
 
I would advocate that you go out and shoot a lot (thousands of photos) before you buy more lenses. Learn what you have and what it can and cannot do, and then decide what, if anything, you're missing. If you have until summer, getting 10-15,000 photos should be no problem, which will give you a lot of practice with exposure, composition and familiarity with your setup.

You might be surprised that you'll probably find yourself shooting and desiring a wider lens for landscapes rather than a zoom. I shoot most of my landscapes (just a Nikon D3100) with my 35mm f/1.8 for the image quality. I only use my 55-200mm when I can't "zoom" with my feet.

Of course, if you don't plan on being close to your subjects, a zoom would be good. Both the Canon 75-300mm and 55-250mm entry-level lenses are super cheap. You probably should grab one either way. Just be aware that the 75-300mm does not have image stabilization, whereas the 55-250mm does.

Don't forget you can often times rent lenses from a shop if you want to try one out before you buy.

Yes, with Photoshop CS 5.x you'll need to do a conversion to .DNG to use RAWs from the T4i.

Camera Raw 7.1 will handle them directly, but direct integration with that is only provided in CS 6 and Lightroom 4.x
 
If you decide to get a telephoto zoom, stay far, far away from the Canon 75-300mm lens. It's probably the worst lens Canon has ever made as far as image quality goes. The 55-250mm however is excellent for a consumer lens as well as the 70-300mm IS lens.

Also what RandemTox said is correct. Adobe has a free .DNG converter available for download for people running older versions of Photoshop and Lightroom.

This you have to answer yourself (within reason). If you don't know what else you need, then you don't need to buy anything just yet. What you do need, is time and practice. Go out, and shoot as much as you can with what you got. Eulogy got it right, shoot a few thousand shots first, and see what you're missing.

Just about the only thing you might want to buy now is Understanding Exposure. :p
