OK, I just got my new system setup and fired up Portal, getting a weird problem.
Whenever I look around, everything gets kinda blurry, starts flicking and flashing. Kinda hard to describe, but it looks horrible.

I have all settings at max and 1920x1200.

Everything at stock speeds.

Asus P5Q Deluxe
Intel Q9450
Corsair 2 x 2GB DDR2 1066MHz Dominator
VelociRaptor
ATI Radeon 4870 with latest drivers
X-Fi XtremeGamer with latest drivers
Corsair HX620W
Vista Ultimate SP1 x64

What are your temps? Did you adjust the fan speed on your 4870 to about 35% yet?

pretty high I guess, CCC shows temp of 80 C sitting at idle
I haven't done anything, just took the card out of the box and plugged it in

well this is weird
I put my old Nvidia 8800 GTS 320 back in and same problem

I tried to take a video
let me know if you have any ideas

edit: even stranger, if I record myself playing with Fraps, it doesn't show up in the recording

if it happens on both videocards it's your monitor then.

Install latest drivers for your monitor? Does it happens at lower/different resolutions.?

Edit: noticed you said it doesn't show up in the recording because it's a video and your monitor has a hard time refreshing the actual game footage... Yeah check what I said up top, try a different display if possible.

no drivers installed for monitor, Windows says I already have the latest and won't let me update
I tried 1280x1024 and it's exactly the same
don't have another monitor - guess I could drag this system into the living room and try it on my Samsung 4665 LCD HDTV

I tried it on my TV, same thing.
Can anyone see what I'm talking about on the video? Surely this isn't normal.

edit: unfuckingbelievable, it was the vertical sync option, turned that on and it's fixed
why is this even an option? and why would it be turned off by default?

You need to enable Vsync to get rid of the image tearing.
edit: lol I just read your edit :)

yeah I did a bit of reading about Vsync, I don't see how anyone could play with it off, looks absolutely aweful!!

It doesnt always look awful.
How bad it looks depends on the display you have, the framerate the game is running at in relation to the framerate of the monitor and your own perception.

I've used my PC for years with Vsync off and only occasionally seen image tearing.
Having said that, I'm playing Grid now and have had to turn VSync on for that game but luckily it still gets around 60fps.

The video you posted is the worst case of tearing I have seen, gotta say!
