Are you planning on an Intel build or an AMD? Are you going full ATX or Micro?

Here goes the breakdown most peole are using:

1. AMD setups: (what most are going with)

Pros for AMD setups currently is that the cost is much lower than the Intel setups. Most people are going with the 45nm X2 chips as they are low on power and still can run blu-ray content easily.

A. AMD x2 or Phenom II + 780G chipset
Cons to this chipset: You only get 2.1 audio (in one case 5.1) over HDMI

B. AMD x2 or Phenom II + Nvidia 8200/8300 chipset
Pro's to this chipset: 7.1 audio over HDMI

2. Intel Setup:

A. C2D or Quad core + 9300/9400 Nvidia chipset
Pros: 7.1 audio over HDMI

@ dylskee: I'd prefer going for an Intel build... but again... AMD is cheaper...
what would you suggest for an Intel based system????

@ endershadow: about the motherboard, any more suggestions...????

Do you need 5.1 or 7.1 sound? If 7.1 go with a 8200/8300 Nvidia board. There are tons of them out there, just depends on what you need. For reference the board I am going to be getting is here.

Most of us are going 7.1 to future proof ourselves and be able to watch blu-rays with the correct audio out (even if our recievers cannot at this point handle it). The difference in price between the 780G chipset and the Nvidia 8200/8300 is negligible.

Do you plan on recording OTA TV? If so make sure you include a TV tuner in your purchase. Without knowing more about your goals for the HTPC it gets hard to recommend hardware to you.

My full build (which is pricey for a HTPC) is found here. Worth noting is that my receiver will be handling all the audio via HDMI. If you plan to connect an amp you may need some additional hardware to get the right connectors.

I'm planning to build a HTPC with 5.1 sound (can't go for 7.1 coz my sound system supports 5.1) and full HD 1080p display...

here's what I need to know:

1- Mother Board: Intel based, best and the cheapest option available with onboard 5.1 HD sound & HD 1080p display.

2- would 2 GB ram be enough or do I need to make it 4 GB????

3- Pentium Processor...duo or quad???? best and cheapest option that supports my system with no over heating problem..
