new system raid setup

i just got a new system put together and want to get some drives and setup the os as raid 5
i never used raid before but i hear it makes a noticable difference.
i mainly use 3d apps like 3dmax etc and photoshop and illustrator, but i also do video editing, so most of my files, esp the video ones are pretty big
my new pc is a dual 3.6 xeon 2mb 800 fsb l2 cache Per processor.
i will probably install 64 bit win xp unless someone has any suggestions.
i was looking at getting 3 scsi 15k 36 gig hd's for the raid setup. unless someone has suggestions. also i run 2 gb 400mhz ram and will prb jump up another 2 gigs soon.
also just got my dell 2405 widescreen so i cant wait to get this thing setup and dialed in.
 
Clicky If you get a SCSI drive, it should probably be for programs, and it should most certainly be a Fujitsu MAU.

If you are serious about high transfer rates, you can't beat a pair of Maxtor Atlas 15K IIs in RAID-0, as a scratch disk for your image and video data files. For high capacity storage, Hitachi DeskStar 7K500 and WD4000KD are the drives to beat.
 
well i was going to run like 3 to 4 smaller sized drives in the 36 gig range. for high speeds. if i do that can i run 2 ide or sata drives (larger size) and also config these as a seperate raid? that way i can store my files somewhere else. i dont need all my files to be on the fast drives, i can just use them these till they are done being worked on and then move them to the storage drive(s)
 
My recommendation would be single 36 as C -OS, progs etc, two 36s in raid 0 - in two volumes, first volume (edge of disk) of about 10 Gigs for SWAP and scratch disk, second volume for files being worked on. Then get yourself two large SATA disks in RAID 1 for long term storage. Essentially the setting I have, although I also have NAS for archival storage. RAID 5 not worth it performance wise if your OS and scratch disks are not independant from it (and then rember only if the RAID 5 is done by hardware on the controller board).
