Im sure theres 1000 of these threads made each minute, so bear with another one. Ive been out of the loop on PC hardware for quite some time, last pc I build was a 2.4b P4 (which oc'd like a demon.) I do my research and buy quality products. That being said here is the specs of what I am looking to purchase in the next month. It will run on air for the first month, then most likley going to a watercooling setup built mostly from dangerden products. (tdx, d5 pump, black ice 120mm rad). I do plan to OC some, but it is not the primary concern of this rig. This is to play games, fast, and do anything else i need to do without a hiccup.

Processor: AMD 4400+ x2 (chosen for the 1mb of l2 per core, dual core for multitasking smoothness.)

Motherboard: A8N-SLI Premium (top of the line amd board, everything integrated, SLI for future use)

Hard Drive: 74gb WD Raptor 10k (fastest HD short of SCSI?)

Video Card: XFX 7800 GT (Cheapest 7800 GT I could find at newegg)

PSU: Silverstone SST-ST60F (Best Modular & SLI PSU?) I was considering a NeoHE, but rather avoid te possible issues, and need to RMA parts.

Memory: 2x 512mb Corsair Ballistix PC3200

LiteOn: DVD+/-RW Burner

Case: Gigabyte Aurora 3D

Total: $1600 or so w/shipping.

Comments/Improvements?
 
A couple of things.

Consider a WD2500KS for the HD. Very close performance to the Raptor with much more space.

Corsair doesn't make Ballistix, Crucial does. Also, if you're dropping that much cash on a system, might as well get 2 gigs. This G.Skill has been recommended quite a bit lately. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231021

Is a modular PSU a must have?

Never was a huge fan of XFX cards, they seem to fail quite a bit. Take a look at what e-VGA has to offer.

Consider an NEC 3550A for the DVD drive, one of the fastest on the market for 40 bucks.
 
If you want modular and SLI, go with the Hiper 580W Type R PSU. It is sleek and powerful, 650W peak I think, you might have to search for one though.
 
Get a dual-core Opteron rather then the X2. An SLI motherboard should not be bought for future-proofing. Get an Epox NF4 Ultra non-SLI instead. I would get a Seasonic S12-500 for the PSU. Get 2GB of RAM. If you don't want/need 2Gb now just get a single 1GB stick. Get a NEC 3550A.
 
1. If you want modular, get the Enermax Liberty series. It's better than that second-string Hiper stuff. Check the reviews if you don't believe me.

2. Drop the 4400+ and get an Opteron 170. On watercooling, you should be able to hit 3.0GHz, if not more.

3. Skip the SLI board. No point in buying it for "future-proofing". Get the DFI NF4 Ultra-D or the EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra.

4. Get a Seagate 7200.9 SATAII hard drive. They're proven to be faster than Raptors, and run much more quietly.

5. Get an NEC 3550A DVD-RW. Great drive for the money.

6. See if you can get an eVGA card instead of XFX.
