I'm currently gaming on an Intel Q9650, EVGA GTX 280 with 6 GB of RAM (I donated the other 2GB to a friend with my old processor, graphics card + mainboard).
I can play most games at max or near max settings, yet my card lacks the DX11 goodies and I think if I go up to a larger monitor (27 or 30) I'll need more horsepower, plus I currently use this computer with ESXi via dual-boot, when i build the new system I'll be ordering a cheapo graphics card so that the mainboard will POST and boot into esxi, as i currently have no onboard video, and intend to use the old system as my ESXi server for when i do lab work or my girlfriend needs more horsepower for photo editing.
My budget is pretty flexible, but I'd like to try and keep it as economical as possible, preferably by spreading it out in phases (CPU/Mainboard/RAM + PSU, GPU, Harddrives + Soundcard). It all depends what the total comes out to.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming (Guild Wars 2, Skyrim, FPS, Minecraft, everything), Wherever possible in windowed/windowed fullscreen mode.
Office Applications (home office, probably a dual-boot), VMware to some extent (Cisco Call manager environments, workstations for more IP Phones, etc), some photoshop + photo editing (Bibble, GIMP, Paint.net), possibly some FRAPs/Video editing (minimal)
2)What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Around 1000 Euros (preferably less), I want to do it in stages though to spread the costs around.
3) Which Country?
Germany (Berlin)
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget?
CPU
CPU Cooler (Maybe one of the Corsair water kits?)
Mainboard
RAM
GPU
PSU (for the old system)
Harddrive(s) - 2x 2TB (dual boot, and so i can backup the fileserver and do a clean install)
Soundcard (maybe)
Maybe some fans/GPU Cooler if it helps to keep the system quiet
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing?
1: Corsair 800D
2: DVD Drive (it works, thats enough, I almost never use it)
3: Intel X25-M SATA 2 80GB SSD
4: PSU: Corsair HX750
6) Will you be overclocking?
Maybe, from what I've read its fairly easy now, so why not.
7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
BenQ V2400W 24" Monitor at 1920x1080, I'm considering going up to a 27" or 30" monitor though (thats outside the current budget), or maybe just a second 24" Monitor (extended desktop).
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Between now and Christmas (preferably in stages)
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.
USB 3, crossfire or SLI Support.
Maybe RAID? (is RAID even worth it when the OS is on an SSD?)
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
Yes, Windows 7 Professional x64 and x32
I'm currently thinking the following:
CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K
Mainboard: Not a clue
ram: 16GB or 8GB RAM (easiest brands for me to get are Corsair and G.Skill)
GPU: 6970s and 6950s seem to be great bang for your buck right now right? (some one of those from EVGA or XFX)
PSU: (for old system) CORSAIR VX Series VX450W
Soundcard: not a clue
