I havent been able to play many of the newer games of the past few years due to an outdated system. Well Im building a new system and will be able to play all of the newest and greatest games out there!

And I want to take advantage of this immediately :D

So what do you recommend? I already thought of Crysis, Crysis warhead, Far Cry 2, Metro 2033 and Just cause 2. But I like more than just shooters. ;)

Oh yeah the system is:
Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8ghz (OC to whatever i can safely do)
GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H
EVGA Geforce GTX 470 (the factory overclocked one)
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4GB DDR3 1600
CORSAIR 650HX
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1TB
Win 7 Home Premium

PS. I'm getting the hex core so I can get back into level design/3d modeling again. Any of the recent games have good editors and mod community i could get into?

Get a 5850/70, couple more monitors for Eyefinity, and you'll have a blast with not only games but with your 3d Modeling. Also less heat and power consumption. ;)

Some good games,

Dragon Age Origins
Mass Effect 1 & 2
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Blur (just got it today...pretty fun)
The Witcher
World in Conflict
Allods Online

Batman: Arkham Asylum (FANTASTIC)
Borderlands
Dragon Age: Origins
Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Just Cause 2 (Download the demo, first, just to make sure it's your thing)
Bioshock 2
Mass Effect 1 and 2
Ghostbusters

Get a 5850/5870? I hope you're just trolling. The 470 is much more than enough for any of today's games. Nearly every review but [H] declared the 470 a winner of the 5850, and that's only because [H] has very hardcore benching at very high resolutions that... most likely don't apply to the OP's display.

Yes it's hotter and consumes more power... but unless the guy lives in a home without air conditioning, recycles his urine, and powers his home off wind and solar cells, he probably doesn't give a hoot.

Usually helps to read more than the first three words. I said get a 5850 or 5870 so he could use Eyefinity. He would have a large amount of space for his 3D modeling and for games. Ya troll lol.

Some good casual games,

L4D2
GRID
Tropico 3
Guild Wars

Recently I've gotten back into continuing my Dawn of War 2 campaign. Will probably get Chaos Rising when I'm done with it. Also just reinstalled Need for Speed Shift. Should hold me over until GT5 comes out.

Another RTS worth checking out is Company of Heroes.

Dude I got fallout 3 goty edition new at walmart for $29.99 that's a sweet game worth buying

I was just about to recommend this.
Some others to toss in the cart..
-World of Warcraft
-Starcraft 2 (coming soon)
-Crysis Warhead
-Fallout 3
-Battlefield Bad Company 2
-Dragon Age

There are too many to list.

Batman: Arkham Asylum - I remember playing... or i should say attempting to play the demo of this. It was pretty cool.
Blur - Sounds fun! I like arcade racers. Is the campaign mode any good?
Fallout3 - I played this when it came out. Albeit at low settings at low res with low FPS :D
WoW - Havent played in over a year. I'll start up again once the new expansion comes out.
Borderlands - Yes! I LOVED this game. First game in years that i actually pre-ordered. It howerver did not play well on my old system, even at low settings. It will be a whole new experience playing it again!!
Allods online - now this is interesting. It looks like a WOW clone, but a good one. Is it out yet? I may just have to try it.

Thank you for all the ideas guys, this is great!

For single player I enjoyed the orginal crysis rather than crysis warhead if you are going to choose one.

Fallout3 goty edition is a good buy even at msrp.

Splinter Cell: Conviction (plays exactly like Batman Arkham Asylum with all the sneaking and hiding in the dark)
Just Cause 2: Great sandbox game.
Blur: Awesome Arcade racing game.
Sins of A Solar Empire: Great RTS game. Impulse had it on sale for $3.99 for the Memorial Weekend.

Sins of a solar empire - that's a homeworld-esque RTS?

Are the splinter cell games worth it? I played the original waaayyyy back in the day and enjoyed it, but I havent read up on its multiple sequels.

ooh ooh, oblivion withOUT mods. :p

Also

Bioshock 1 & 2
Prince of Persia
Assassin's Creed I & II
Devil May Cry 4
Call of Duty 4 MW

Allods is out. It's pretty good and is free. So all you can really do is try it. ;)

Blur's Campaign isn't too bad. It's a fun game either way.

The first Stalker. Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl. The absolute best non linear game out there.

Get a 5850, its a better card.

He's either an:

I like the ones where it's too dark to see anything, and having Eyefinity just gives you... three screens of darkness!

I don't like that when you look through the scope it only affects the center screen...

The hardcore ATI fanboys seem to think that everyone wants or uses eyefinity.

First of all this isn't the hardware section. Why the fanboy wars? It's been bad for the past few months now and not just at [H].

Look, considering the gains the 5850 has over say my GTX280 which for the most part aren't very big if at all in some cases that I paid the same price over a year and a half ago that you can finally find 5850 for it's really not all that great. TBH I'm disappointed by every card from both sides other than 5870 this round and even find that to be a bit pricey compared to last gens offerings and performance increase over the previous gen.

Keep it in the video card section.

Yeah WTF? I support the company that has provided me with quality products over the years. Not the one that has given me faulty hardware, buggy drivers and an all around frustrating gaming experience. Things may have changed. And your experiences may be different. But for me, ATI wasnt even an option. Nvidia earned my business and that is why I bought their product. No amount of fanboy jaw flapping or googled image linking will change my mind. Period.

This wasnt what the topic was about. So please, dont post if you just want to kick up shit.

@both ^^: sensitive much? its a public forum where people express opinions. its cool if you dont agree with other people's opinions but it aint mean you gotta hate on everyone who aint with nvidia. just ignore it. i'm sorry i contributed to something that you've ruled out completely. i just thought that someone who might be in the same place as you with games/design/modding that maybe it would be a viable possibility. i dont even have this myself as im only on a mid-range card. so srsly..not everyone who has a positive preference of other brands is a fanboi. get over yourselves.

It helps to take a look in the mirror sometimes or to adopt a less argumentative style :)

this.

Where do you start with a person who tells a 470 owner to sell their card for the "superior" performance of the 5850?

I make many helpful posts, but he was straight trolling. Either that or he would have to be a monumental idiot, but I'm going with the former.

While I wouldn't recommend buying a GTX470 over a HD5850, I certainly wouldn't tell someone who already owned a GTX470 to sell it for an HD5850. However, he was right. The HD5850 offers roughly the same performance for a lower price, less power draw, and less heat.
