MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 motherboard

Athlon 3500+ w/ Alpha 8150T heatsink

Corsair TwinX XMS-3200XL Xtra Low Latency RAM (2225)

eVGA 6800GT videocard

Antec TrueControl 550W PSU

Not overclocked.

I've tried timings of 2225 and 2336

It fails Prime95 after about a minute.

It freezes in games.

everything is brand new.

Any thoughts on what it can be, and what I can do to fix it?

I'd hope not....I bought this RAM to fix other RAM problems.

I'm running memtest86 right now to find out.

*sigh*

and the other boards have their own problems.

maybe I should just go back to my P4 shuttle

Wait, does every other mobo have the same problem? If so then the problem is with the PSU.

no, I'm talking in a general sense, all I've read on 939s is compatibility problem after compatibility problem.

I've only used this PSU.

voltages are 12.7v, 3.3v, and 5v.

tried to get the 12v down a bit, but have been unsuccessful so far.

Well, if you can try other PSUs. If not, then your shuttle is the next best thing for you.
BTW, don't forget to return everything if you can't get it working so then you can buy the 939 or whatever when it becomes stable.

actually, I'm priming with my old RAM (which didn't work earlier, when I was accidentally using it in single channel)...and it's working fine. at least, prime is working so far...I'll let it run 12 hours, then I have to reinstall my games. I have a LAN Party tomorrow at noon, so I'm in a bit of a crunch.

Ok.

Memtest86 checks out with both models of RAM (Corsair Value Select, and XMS3200XL).

Prime95 lasts about 13 seconds on the XMS.

Prime95 lasted about 9.5 hours on the Value Select.

It crashed in games immediately with Detonator 66.00

it crashed in games after a few minutes with Detonator 65.73.

At what point do I just give up, send it all back, rebuild my old system and just hold off for a generation?

So are the 939 motherboards reliable or not? Sure are a lot of posts with troubles building these systems. I know it's going to happen with all systems, but for some that don't have the time and energy to send stuff back all the time and waste a whole weekend or two or three... for a few extra bucks having a custom built system by xxx with a 3 yr. warrenty for 70 bucks is a real good deal.

Don't flame me, I'm just saying the next time someone asks "Is it hard to build my own PC or should I order one from xxx" maybe having someone else build it isn't a bad idea.

Ok...flame away.
:(

Actually that is a pretty good idea, let some one else fix your new-tech problems. :)

why would I want to do that? I've been building PCs for over 5 years....why pay someone else to do what I can do better?
Now, for laptops, I do that. I have a 3y

Also, the old system. asterisked items were NOT put in A64 system.

Shuttle SB65G2*
P4 2.6c @ 3.2ghz*
1gb PC-3200
eVGA 6800GT @ Ultra
SB Audigy2
8x DVD+-RW
36.7gb Raptor 10k SATA
160gb Seagate 7.2k SATA

So, I'm going to lose out on the 2x 250gb SATA drives, extra DVD+-RW, speed increase, and the expansion that the new system allowed, as well as other quirks(SATA problems with Ghost, and inadequate power to USB for my 10gb external). But, that system was a fucking rock. I never got a BSOD on the system since its inception in Oct 03.

By your current set-up, my question is this, why do you want to upgrade so badly? The most that you'll see of an increase is 15 percent for what, 500 smackers?

needed more hdd space than the shuttle allowed

it was either:

1. buy the Linksys NAS thing for $100, 2 250gb hdds w/ external enclosures for roughly 400..

so, $500 in the end.

2. sell my shuttle to a guy here in town for $450, and put the $200 I'd need for the NAS stuff into the $650. That'd buy me a new motherboard and RAM, and I'd have to buy a new case & PSU. Of course, I wanted good stuff, so...it was a difference of $200 to have a faster system, a system with greater expansion capability, and a system then required only 1 power plug (vs an entire 6 outlet surge protector for the NAS setup).

As it is....I'm thinking about getting a new motherboard....and ditch the K8N Neo2.

Well, that explains alot. Best bet is Asus or you could just RAM the whole thing and start fresh.

Asus would be better from me from the standpoint of SATA. I need 4 SATA.

I just haven't found much about the A8V Ver 2.

(and I need the system ASAP....)

ordered the A8V.

I hope it fixes my problems....I no longer have a shuttle to go back to.

(my friend gave me the $$ for the shuttle)
