You guys helped my on my HTPC http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1672354&highlight= and my 32TB custom array http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1672351&highlight= .. so I'm coming back to you for additional advice.
I am building a new workstation for doing Photoshop. I may play games on it, but I doubt it. I mainly want to be able to do photo editing in 4K and watch 4K videos with ease on it. I also want it to be amazingly fast.
My current setup, is having a about 70TB attached to my HTPC server, and then using a second computer network attached to that for doing Photoshop. This old Photoshop workstation is running an i7 920 2.67ghz with 12GB. The machine is in a corner, while I have a 32' 1080P LCD on a cart that uses wireless HDMI to transmit the picture. The wHDMI doesn't alway work, and uses a 5.8ghz frequency, which sometimes messes with my AC 5.8ghz wireless. Because of the transition to 4K (and there are no 4K wireless transmitters) I will sit the case with the new 4K lcd.
The parts for the new workstation are here: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/zRMJHx
Intel i7-5960x 3Ghz CPU
Thermaltake Water 2.0 Pro Cpu cooler
ASUS Rampage V Extreme motherboard
64GB in 8 DIMM Crucial Ballistix Elite DDR-4 2666 Memory
Samsung SM951 512GB M.2 Drive (SUPERSPEEEEEED!)
XFX Radeon R9 295X 8GB video card
Cooler Master 1200W 80+ PSU
Samsung S34E7960C 4K curved LCD
(the rest you can see in the PCPartPicker link)
Since I filled up all my SAS ports on my HTPC server, I will have to create a new array for storage. My idea is to get 5 WD RED 4TB drives and put them in a Mobius 5 Bay USB 3.0 array http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CH94GMK/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl with RAID 5 (my other array has RAID 6, but this is not possible on this external array).
As the computer and monitor will be on this cart with a UPS http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ZD0CIM/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl), I will upgrade my wireless network from a Netgear AC1750 to the Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200.
So.. here are my questions:
1.) Where should I plug this USB 3.0 RAID array in? I can put it with my current HTPC server, so everything is joined in one place, but would it be faster plugged into the Netgear router, as there is no overhead and it is straight into the network device.
2.) Would I lose any speed of the RAID array unit plugged in this way via AC3200 wireless rather than into the USB 3.0 port of the Photoshop PC?
3.) Are there any specs in the above build you would change (I'm guessing on the video card)? I value all comments and considerations.
Thanks!
