ok. i made another post about this a few days ago for some general sugestions, but now im looking for the final [H] stamp of aprovel.

i plan on over clocking the hell out of anything that mooves(figurativly speaking), though i have no ram/CPU oc'ing experience.

i am going to play doom 3 and hl2(what self respecting gamer wont) on this, hopfelly at 1280*1024 at 4x AA and 6X AF+. i want it to be a quiet system at night(running folding 24/7) but i can crank up the fans during the daytime. i also do photoshop and work on two moniters, one at 1024*768 and another at 1280*960. both are nice falt screen CRT's. im going to use my current rig as a surver for this and some web stuff if i can.

and yes, i am going to raid the sata's

here is my rig: http://secure.newegg.com/app/WishR.asp?ID=793320
w/ some shin-etsu from zip zoom fly
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=316404

grand toatal: 1373.38 w/ shiping.(i have optical drives, mouse, flopy, keyboard, and a nice soundcard)

now, im probably getting this in a day or two, and then about a week for it all to arive. the only think left is(plz, plz dont laugh) my mom. she controles the credit card and theirfore the fate of my new rig. she seems alright w/ it but ill have the answer tomoro.

so, what does it look like. what fine tweeking do i want to to to the specks list

ps. any tips on this first build?

Ok, all in all it looks as if you have done your homework on this. You have a very nice setup here, but I would make a few suggestions. I am way too tired right now too think of everything (so I'll elaborate on it tomorrow) but here are a few suggestions: First, I know that you want to go with RAID 0 (I'm assuming) for performance, but believe me when I tell you that one WD "Raptor" 10,000rpm SATA alone will blow the doors off those 2 Hitachi's (even in RAID 0). Also, since you're planning on "OC'ing the hell" out of this thing, there are a few parts I would change. For instance, I would swap the True430 for a PC Power & Cooling PSU. Obviously my first choice would be one of their Turbo-Cool models, but if you are sticking to a tighter budget you can get the Silencer 410 for about $80. I've had a TruePower430 and a True550 and they were both great PSUs, but if you are going to go for a substantial OC, the PCP&C units are a little more stable. I'll try to give you a little more detail tomorrow 'cuz for now I'm going to sleep ;)

thanks for the reply. i realise now that" overclocking the hell" here meens alot more than it does most places :p ;). lets say, i will "substantaly overclock" :p. as for the raid i have heard that those particular drives are quite fast, and the fact that im getting 160 gigs is i think the tipping point. i was however considering a rapter, but buth the size and my budget was to low. anywhay, thanks for the sugestions :)

You arent gonna see any realword performance gain with the RAID setup. Of course its your choice.. if you actually need 320GB of storage space, then go for it, otherwise, save a hundred bucks on the extra HD.

Also.. for quality.. go to AJUMP.com and buy a TAGAN 480W PSU. I think they are much better deals than the PC&C, and they are really quite.

Also, dont expect to have a quiet system folding all night. If you are running an processor all night that has an overclock, dont expect a quiet system.

o_0
He's only gettting 2 x 80GB drives
80 + 80 = 160

And i agree with foenix, get a Raptor adn a seperate 120GB or 160GB drive

The raptor will be just as fast in not faster and you wont lose all your data if aone of your hard drives gets corrupted

well, id be willing to downclock to stock for night usage. id just like it to retain the ability to run quiet and still fold.

about the hdd's. a rapter and a 120 is still beond my budget... and i only get 36.7 gigs of fast storige... and on the stability side im useing my current computer as a backup/surver rig, so i can store 120 gigs of files

the PSU
i have heard realy good thinks about this psu, and it fits my price perfictly, so as long as their isnt an overwelming call for a pcpc, or a tagan, im sticking w/ it if thats alright :).

anywhay, thanks for the responces. keep 'em coming :)

PS, what do you think of the ram?

bump/update. ok. i have convinced my mother(i hate saying that) to let my buy this thing. now all im waiting for is for the 6800GT to be in stock. btw, does anyone now a place whare i can get fan header to molex converters, or 2 fan headers to one fan header spliters?(i want to plug in 2 coolermaster led fans into one hookup on the fan controler, but they use fan headers only, and i cant find the converters that came w/ them. should i just cut and solder one wire to the other?

just want to warn you that cable sleeving is a pain in the ass. Is your mobo supported by that zalman northbridge, and cooler, meaning does it fit? Also spring for a bigger psu like everyone else said, egg has some Awesome refurb deals on enermax, sparkle, and thermaltake.

i genoraly dont like refurbs, and i dont have the cash to upgrade to a biger psu

yes, the NB does suport the cooler(it has normal push pin conection system)

the local radio shack has a molex pin remover, so that will help it.

any answers on the fan question?

tomorow morning(if they have the gt) im getting the rig, so apart from the PSU and HDD, this is the last chance to recomend somthing...

also, as long as i dont open the PSU, sleaving(read: removing Molex conectors) doesnt void the warenty right?

sleeving, no it doesn't void the warranty its a true pain in the ass as most will say. it looks kick ass though.

hope so. i also hope i can get a molex remover from radio shack. im not shure if thay have it at the local store now. they do have it online, and i might as well have them order one

bump/update: new egg wont have the GT untill monday. anywhay, is the ram im getting good? should i go w/ a gig of mushkin 3500 instead(i heared it has CH5 chips, but i heard that they dont OC well)

im also droping the shin-etsu, and going for some good old fasioned AS5.

and should i go w/ the 7000-CU or ALCU??

if i were you i would just pre order from new egg. I have watched 2 newegg ETAs pass wihout ever seeing it actualy avialable for sale. It could just be me missing the exact time they are on sale but i checked each day and never saw anything. If you pre order at evga it will ship on august 2nd...which is the monday.

how do you pre-order from newegg? i dont see how you can do that....

if you go to evga.com go to the 6800 family...go to the 6800gt and click pre order...

its 399.99 but w/o shipping so like its 3 bucks more then newegg.

They supposedly will ship on the 2nd.

thats all i know

i ordred mine , so i am scheduling the rest of my PC parts around the arrival..i am int he same boat as you if u look at my other post.

ahh, i thought you ment preorder from new egg, not from evga.com :p

anywhay, i like ordering everything from the same place, so ill just wait for the egg to get it

ok...yeah i think i am ordering everything from newegg except that. THey are the only peice of hardware in my list that is in high demand and hard to find. If your scared of bad service eVGA so far has been VERY nice and peopl say their service is good

You have a great setup there, I just have a few suggestions for you. The Northbridge cooler is unnecessary on that motherboard, you can skip that if you want. Newegg has a deal for a 74 GB raptor for $158 right now, I would jump on that. It will provide a LOT better perform than your raid setup. Stick with that PSU, it has very stable rails and will handle any OC you do just fine.

whoa i might jump on that raptor too..how much is it usually?

I bought one for about that price awhile back... great drive, but insanely loud... gets pretty hot too.

Hot+Loud = no (in my book)

if you like that little whine it makes, then you'll be fine. Otherwise, I'd suggest getting a Seagate sata (200GB is pretty cheap)

$158 is still to much for only 74 gigs. and i want it somewhat quiet(again, night system)

from reports the NB hs is not good enough if your running an overclocked system for long periods. and its only 10 bucks :p

but if you use the stock heatsink on a retail..dont u get a warranty?

if you install a new heatsink..dont u void it?

If you want to OC your system will be fairly noisy unless you use water (Depending on how you dfine noisy). Quiet Systems (read < 23Dba) are hard enough to achieve without adding a screaming fan to the mix. An active cooler's northbridge Fan probably won't be heard over an OC'd CPU's Fan (and you can always undervolt it if you so desire).

As for the drives, Raid 0 is just silly in almost all cases. I'd suggest 160GB Seagates, or 74GB Raptors. (Depending upon whether you want speed or space). I have two Seagate 160s coming in a few days, and they'll be JBOD.

Anandtech and storagereview both have excellent articles on RAID.

which why i dont get why people OC..i mean..are you really going to see that big of a jump in actually performance

i find that even in my head, i like raid systems.

3. my cpu fan is quiet. i sugest you take a look at the system first( http://secure.newegg.com/app/WishR.asp?ID=793320) im useing a cnps-7000. im not overclocking two high(about .4 ghz), and a.64's are fairly cool(i think that in the hard ocp 3000+ oc artical they used a budget athelon xp cooler along w/ a koolence unit, getting about the same results. i do plan on running the system w/ all fans cranked from about 7 am-midnight, and then ill turn them down and just fold, and id be willing to downclock to stock between 12 and 7am.

zalman's are pretty quiet but don't cool all that well obviously and are pretty huge, make sure u check to see if the thing fits your board too. Also i have the Antec true 380 its not that quiet, compared to some psu's so if your going for the super quiet your probably not going to get it, but it should be close enough. other then that everything looks fine, the psus cables might not be long enough as i have the hard drives positioned like that in my sonata case and they barely reached, i needed an extension cable.

i dont want super quiet, i just want to be able to sleep at night. and yes, it does fit. theoretically the zalman fits all a64 mobo's, and this one is particularly open around the cpu

if it means going up 10fps or more in a game that could mean the difference in a laggy unplayable game to a playable one.

Rather than argue a fairly meaningless point - allow me to add something constructive.

If you change out the Case fans you have for quieter ones, you'll drop noise by a significant margin. (25 Dba fans to 22 Dba fans = half as much noise, roughly)

Investing in some sound dampening materials is also reccommended. www.muffledcomputing.com offers some high grade product. Silentpcreview is also an excellent resource for quiet mods.

As for Raid - it's definately cool - and RAID levels other than 0 are even useful! ;) If you want to stripe the drives, feel free - but be aware of the higher failure rate. As for Budget - why not get a single 160 GB drive (for $30 less than two 80's) that will be quieter, cooler, and expandable with another 160GB drive in a month or two to an even bigger RAID0 setup?

i dont want dampening as its a windowed case, and im overclocking. the noise prob will be controlled by the fann controler. and i can alwase get another 2 80 gigers for a 4 disk 320 gig RAID 0 aray.. thated be sweet...(the mobo suports it). or just imagin a 4 disk 216 gig raid aray of 4 10k rapters... one second, i have to go change my underware(i cant belive i just said that...).

the leadtek 6800 gt just came in stock, and i read a review whare they got it up to 430 and 1.19 ghz on stock cooling. i wanted to get far cry viea the EVGA deal, but i want this system fast... and i heard that the card was quiet. anybody else w. this card have any ideas?
