New system build, advice needed.

Well, my old system has seen its last days, so it's time for a new one. Here is what I am currently considering.

Mobo:
- DFI infinity ultra
- DFI NF4 Ultra-d

Processor:
- athlon 64 3200+ ($155)
- opteron 146 (OEM is 201...PIB 221)
- Possibly 3800x2 ($299)...but this is out of what I want to spend unless it is definitly worth it

Memory
- crucial ballistx 512x2

Vid card
- probably an x800 gto

My dilema is this, if I get the opteron, I don't know if I can trust an OEM processor, so I might end up getting the PIB, but would want a new HSF which would be ~35(xp-90), and at this price I'm only 40 away from a 3800x2.

Basically, I can't decide what I should do for my processor. I would probably overclock whichever I get (although nothing extreme) as I dont' want to shorten the lifespan of my processor too much. Is the x2 going to be something I wish I had 6months down the line? or am I just better off going witht the 3200+? I don't mind spending money if the gains justify it, but if I'm only going to get a 3% increase for like 80 dollars, I'd rather not. Same with the mobo. If I'm not going to be extreme with my OC'ing, is the infinity good enough? or for $30 more should I just get the nf4?

your wisdom on the matter is appreciated.

Skip the Ballistix. Drop down to cheaper RAM and get the X2. The DFI has a ton of divider options, so you shouldn't be limited at all by your RAM.
 
i would really shoot for 2 gb of ram though.. or a 1 gb stick now so you have the posibility of another 1gb stick down the road..

and nothing is wrong with getting oem.. maybe get 2gb of ram and a 3000+ venice and oc it.. that's what i would personally do.. unless i could get that operton 146 for $150, but not $200

me neither, esp when you consider what some of the sticks are capable of
 
The dual core processor will certainly be the most future proofed out of all the solutions that you listed. I would personally go for the X2 and get cheaper RAM. Another viable option is to get the cheapest Venice that you can find and OC it to death. Neither is a bad solution, but it all comes down to how much you multitask and how much you want to spend.
 
i would go for the x2 as well... from what i've been seeing of the newer 3000+ venice's coming out they aren't hitting the speeds the proc's like my week 17 hit... my 2nd choice would be the opteron, but its still not a dual core;)
