New Swiftech Radbox

Swiftech came out with a new plastic radbox ...for the same price as the old one. Now, is it just me or do you feel safer with metal or plastic?

doesnt look like it will cause any problems unless you regularly punch your radbox, throw it across the room, or something similar.
 
Did the price drop seeing how as they don't have to machine anything now?
 
Omg what is with swiftech and 'injection molding' I have the metal radbox and even though I dont use it since my rad is in my case, id always go for something a lot stronger than plastic holding up that heavy rad unless if it was a 1x120mm rad. ...not a 2 or 3x

It would be better if they lowered the cost of it to something like 10 bucks which would still probably be 9 over cost
 
They actually lowered the price since I posted this...kinda odd...it is now $19.95 for the new one...5 bucks cheaper...wow...should be a lot lot less
 
They may well lower it once they recoup the tooling costs. Still for $5.00 less I can live with a product that won't have the finish chip off or rust and serves the same purpose.

An injection molding die is not cheap so they must be selling lots of them to justify the expense. :)

So it's just four bucks cheaper then a metal Radbox?

I would think that for a single rad it would be okay but I'd rather go with the metal one for a dual rad.

It depends largely upon the materials used. If it's molded from a fiberglass reinforced plastic it'll be considerbly stronger than if it's just basic ABS. I had a FRP RC car that I managed to get run over by a car :( and after replacing the wheels that were crushed by the car I was out playing with it 5 minutes later. If I'd managed to do that with my carbon fiber worlds buggy I'd have been out a couple hundred dollars in crushed pan, kick plate and shocks and towers plus servos and batteries.

But, yes, if they went with simple ABS I'd be hesitent to hang a double rad from it although I really doubt they'd be that short-sighted.
 
Maybe I was quick to judge...someone said the plastic won't rust or chip which I never thought about but it is a good point. Plastic can be a pretty strong....maybe swiftech will go with an injection molding for a new radiator :p
 
Take a look under the hood of your car, you might be surprised. Many car makers are using FRP to make the tanks for radiators, intake manifolds and they've been making rocker arm (valve) covers from it since I was in highschool back in the early 80's.
 
im pretty sure the Rev 2 will be able to handle dual radiators and maybe even triple 120mm radiators, but i still prefer the metal version unless the price drop down to 10-12 bucks.
 
Even though the new injection molded plastic version appears strong, I still prefer the metal version.

I would, however, purchase one of the price was down to about $15.00 and I needed one for a single 120mm radiator install.
 
I purchased several items directly from swiftech a little over two weeks ago and received my order today. Included in the order was the then available $15 radbox only option (as opposed to the $25 I believe it was.. kit which had some tubing, a pass-thru connector, and others).

I opened it expecting the metal version, but it's the new one. It seems solid, I haven't mounted yet.

Looks like direct from swiftech the only option is for $20 with just the basic items plus the new pass through similar to the one that was included in the corsair cool kits. So I guess I got a good deal for $15 sans pass-thru (my aurora 3d already has two holes for WC with rubber grommets pre-installed).
