i'm planing on changing my current build (also my main pc) runing a RAID5 using PERC 5/i with 4*1TB

to a itx build with E350 mobo with 4GB ram (have the board) using this case
http://www.u-nas.com/product/nsc800.html

but i am confused on how to run it (what OS)

the data is static, mostly video files so i'm looking into Snapraid and not "live" raid

I would avoid the perc 5/i unless you're using very specific hard disks.

Plug drives into the motherboard, and look into freeNAS.

Snapraid is fine on Linux - Ubuntu or Mint are probably the easiest as they have a repository!

Windows is always an option too of course, though personally I'd only repurpose an existing OS - I wouldn't pay money for an OS when Linux can do what you want as well or better, for free!
