New SSD problem...

Like the title says I'm having a problem with my new SSD and I cannot figure it out.

I recently grabbed a Crucial 256gb m4 SSD due to one of the threads here, it got here today and it's having some issues so I need some help.

When I plug the drive in my computer will no go past the post screen. It stops on the press delete for whatever, press escape for whatever and it won't go past that. I've tried different SATA ports, and different power connections but none are working.

As soon as I unplug the drive the computer has no problems firing all the way up.

Should I just send it back for RMA?

Other suggestions?

Also, today I've gotten the drive to show up in windows, however I have to wait until the computer login process is at the password screen to connect the drives power connector then log into windows and it will show up in my computer screen. Now, when I try to install windows on the drive it doesn't show up in the windows install choice of drives. "

Plug it in after you have booted into windows. That assumes you have your SATA port in ACHI mode. If not I recommend booting off a linux livecd and then plugging in the drive and looking at its SMART. In windows a program like crystaldisk info will be fine. While on linux smartctl is the tool. You can leave it powered and just hot plug the SATA cable.
 
Plug it in after I'm in windows, then use crystaldisk?

Edit: I tried doing that and it didn't work, also I''ve just gone to computer management to see if I could do anything in disk management and when you click on disk management it stays on "connecting to virtual disk service" and never moves from that point.

There are several things I would try.

Put it into another computer.
Put it into an external case.

If it works in either, initialize and format.

If your computer is old perhaps it cannot negotiate the proper speed with the drive.

It works in this one...as I said right above yours. It just only works when I connect it how I explained

Well, no it doesn't work. Stopping your PC from booting is not working. So you need to start troubleshooting. Which you do by eliminating causes.. eg: putting it into a different PC to see if the problem follows the drive or it works fine.

and maybe cut out the attitude when people are trying to help you..
 
I've been trying to eliminate causes. I don't have a different PC to put it into which is why I'm on this forum asking for help from those around me.

My comment wasn't meant with attitude. I was simply pointing out in the post above his it works in this computer but only if I follow those steps. This is so that we could by knowing those facts come up with a more educated guess towards knowing what to try next maybe.

Sounds like the AHCI drivers aren't installed/activated.

There's an easy fix if you're using w7.
 
If you didn't have AHCI enabled in the bios when you installed win7 (assuming that's what you're using), then you set that mode, win7 won't boot. There is a fix for that. GIYF.

I don't think I did have it activated in bios when I installed, but I'm just going to re-install Windows on the new drive anyways.

However, as I said it's not allowing that due to the problems I've mentioned.

I've even tried wiping the current C: drive then plugging in the new SSD, changing to AHCI and trying to boot but it just pauses on the first BIOS screen as I've mentioned.

How can I install and activate the AHCI drivers?

Just one....remove all the other drives from your system and install w7 in AHCI mode on the Intel ports.

If the install disk doesn't recognize your SSD it's time for an RMA.
 
If I understand the problem is that you can't even get the system booted past POST when the drive is attached? Can you even get into the BIOS?

I don't think it's even getting to the OS hand-off if I'm understanding it correctly?

I like what the one person said about trying it in a different system if possible to see if it's the drive or your system that's fubar'd.

Yeah, the drive doesn't show up when using the install disk. However, could this just be due to the AHCI drivers not being installed?

Correct, it won't go past post when the drive is connected. As I said above though, I can get past post if I don't connect the drive until I'm at the login screen.

So there's really no point in looking at drivers, AHCI, operating systems, etc.

If you can't even get to the BIOS when the drive is plugged in, you have a hardware problem. Either the drive is fubar'd or your system mobo / BIOS / whatever pukes when it's plugged in.
 
Well, I believe my BIOS is the latest version as I updated it a week or so before I got the drive in.

So should I just attempt contacting Crucial and try to seek out solutions from them be it doing something computer wise or just sending it back in for an RMA?
 
If you definitely can't try to boot it in another system (e.g., a friend's system), then I would contact Crucial customer support and see what the best option is. You can RMA it but the new one might not work either.

I guess you've tried using different SATA ports, SATA cables, and PSU power connectors?
 
Yeah, I've tried separate SATA ports, separate cables, separate power ports, etc. The SSD even came with the newest firmware that was supposed to have taken care of lots of problems for the drive.

I'll go ahead and give them a call tomorrow or the next day I suppose.

I was just hoping it was going to be something easy I forgot to try and one of you would point it out for me. I guess life isn't all easy though, even though stupidity does play into a lot of disasters and that's what I was hoping this instance was. Lol
