New speaker setup for PC

So recently my 5.1 speakers died on me, which sucks:( good news is that now I get to replace them:D
Since I live in South Africa everything is more expensive so my options are somewhat limited.

Just some background of PC usage, anything from gaming, music and movies.

Firstly, would using a home theatre system be a better option than going for a pc speaker setup?

The 2 options I am looking at are:
Logitech Z906
Samsung HT-F453 (link)

On both ill be using a optical cable for connection.
BTW the mobo that ill be using for this setup is a MSI Z170A Gaming Pro

A lot of people has urged me to go with the theatre setup but not sure if ill be getting true 5.1 from it when connected to my pc, if anyone can confirm this for me by looking at the specs of the mobo and HTS that would be great.
 
One more question, is it possible to connect a A/V receiver via hdmi to a pc for sound only and have video go over dvi to screen to retain 144hz refresh rate?

I'm pretty certain you can't. You could either get a sound card with Optical audio or perhaps get one of these things: Amazon.com: 5.1 Audio & Game Console Adapater Convert 2X RCA Jack to 1/8 (3x 3.5mm) Audio Jack, Logitech 970150 Adapter Compatible: Home Audio & Theater

I'd personally stick to a pc speaker setup, but that's just me. I cannot say whether there is a benefit one way or the other, but I have done the PC > Home Theater setup before and it wasn't the best, due to all the extra crap I had to have on/around my desk.

You won't be getting true 5.1 surround sound if you use optical from your PC. Your PC would have to encode the audio to Dobly Digital or DTS before sending it over the optical, which it doesn't for games and whatnot. You either have to use the three 3.5" jacks with the Logitech set or HDMI to a receiver.

I have the Z906 and it sounds pretty good, but I also have another PC connected to a receiver with HDMI and it sounds significantly better even using the same Z906 speakers. A stand alone receiver costs a lot more though.

My primary screen is 144hz, but I have my receiver connected to a secondary screen with HDMI, I doubt you can do 144hz over HDMI.
 
Decided to go with the Z906 and get a USB headset (G633) so I can switch between then when needed.
