New Space Sim!

Cool thanks for the linky. It looks simple and there's no joystick support but I'm starving for some decent space combat. Visuals look pretty decent already.

Indeed it does. I can't believe no one wants to make games like this anymore. With some of the new technologies available, it's probably possible to take this stuff to even newer levels, but no one has even fucking tried since Freespace 2.

played it, sucks pretty bad.

I am curious how you played it since the game isn't out yet. I'd also like to know what it is you don't like about it. What bothers you may or may not bother me, but I am curious to hear more of your thoughts on this.

The lack of Joystick support is dissappointing, but not surprising. For over 10 years the joystick has essentially been missing from console games where most people currently enjoying the hobby learned to play. Really since Descent Freespace 2 essentially left store shelves, there has been no reason to use a joystick on the PC. Sure there are flight sims, but they are typically devoid of combat and concentrate more on realism and therefore have little to no fun factor as far as I am concerned.

Yeah I was a little disappointed, too. I really loved the joystick in Freespace 2 and to me it just gets me more connected to a space ship. I really enjoyed the implementation of the mouse/keyboard in Freelancer so if this game does it similarly then I'll be a happy space kid.

Apparently there's a demo for this game. I googled it and I'm nabbing it from filefront now.

I'll check it out when I get home.

I guess that since there is a demo out, that's what you played?

Try 'Beyond the Red Line.' We have a demo out now. www.game-warden.com/bsg

I'll check this out as well. I love a good space combat game.

I too, have been wondering why the heck the space combat genre dropped off the face of the earth. Seriously, what gives?

I have no idea. They were really popular back in the day, so I never understood that either. Great games like X-Wing Vs. Tie-Fighter, Tie-Fighter, X-Wing, Descent Freespace 1&2, Wing Commander Prophecy and it's expansion all kicked so much ass.

Well, me being from Russia and all that, I would not think that the game will turn out any good. We, Russians, are quite lazy for one, and I haven't seen any great games come out of my country. It will decent I think.

Considering the demo is in Russian I gave it some slack 'cause I had no idea what was going on or what the menus said. I got into the actual game and it looks really nice. The audio was a bit thin and didn't have much punch but the controls of the fighter itself were pretty good for a mouse/keyboard. It reminded me a lot of Freelancer and that's a good thing. I think it's got potential so hopefully they're motivated to finish the game up right. This one's on me radar. :D

Best post ever. That cracked me up. In Russia's defense STALKER was alright. :p

May be a cool game, I miss Descent and the Lucas Arts sims.

Allegiance still has a good following as well.

MS abandoned it, but it's not true abandonware.. They actualy gave the rights away to the community and released the source. Free download, and you should still find people palying it regulary.

OMG... I've been looking for the name of that game for YEARS...

I remember playing it when it was new, thought it was sweet (played at a internet cafe/gaming place). Never remembered the name, just that it started with A and was from Microsoft lol...

Wish they would make another Freelancer game too, I remember playing through the whole game in a day and then was pissed that the main story ended lol. Was very addicting and fun.

Wing Commander Prophecy was my favorite. I was never all that interested in the Star Wars universe.

Yea, Freelancer was a great game even though it felt really different from other sims because I had to play it with keyboard and mouse. It's a shame Digital Anvil no longer exists.

Demo is in English BTW, I wasnt able to get passed the training, I fell asleep :(

Where did you find the English version? I was playing the Russian one for a while, lots of fun though I'm not sure exactly what I was doing while customizing my ship (Figured Mass / Energy or something are the two main #s).

Same here, Prophecy was the first space sim I ever played but to this day it is still my favorite. If only I could get my hands on a copy of Secret Operations expansion pack...

I have Prophecy but my rig doesn't seem able to play it.

Where is the English demo? link it!

IMO Freelancer had the best user interface for a PC game of any space sim I ever played. The way it used to mouse to aim and navigate at the same time was extremely well done and easy to learn. Let's hope this game becomes as good as it looks.

I haven't tried Wing Commander Prophecy on a modern rig with Vista or anything. Not sure that it would work.

My buddy went back and played it on XP a while back. Apparently there are some texture packs and things that make it look fairly good. He didn't leave the house for a while, so it was working reasonably well I assume.

Well I am running Vista which usually complicates things in reference to old games. As far as the texture packs, I'll have to look for those.

Disregard my post about the English version, I was soo tired, I downloaded beoynd the red line instead :(

X2 was amazing.
X3 had potential, but its extremely steep learning curve and massive hardware requirements really overshadowed the most impressive and largest space sim to date.

Got X3, didn't like it at all. It is pretty, I'll give it that.

In the words of one great, Kramer: "Well this has all been a big tease!" ;) Oh well I hope they either release another English demo before retail or the game only costs $20.

All of the Decents, but for me Wing Commander 4 and 5 were my favorite from the space games. There were a few others that were neat, but were hard to get into. Tie Fighter and X-Wing were great and all but not much story to them.

I would love to see some love to this area of gaming like in the past, but it would really have to support the Joystick, I dont like dedicated flying sims without the stick. FPS / flying mixes I can handle with the keyboard and mouse.

Game looks neat, hope it ends up good
