ok, I've been wanting to get a new sound card but I'm not quite sure what to get. I originally got a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS but that didn't like my mobo or vice-versa. anyways, I wanna get one thats good and possibly not gonna have conflicts. was looking at a M-Audio 5.1 24-bit soundcard. one of my friends has it and pretty much swore his life to it (among others that reviewed it). tell me if this would be a good option or tell me of others that would be just as good. I have a Gigabyte K8N Ultra-9 any and all suggestions are welcomed. thanks in advance

M-Audio would be quite good for music but not the best choice for games. No Directsound hardware acceleration. X-Fi would be best for a gaming machine but there is the possibility of compatibility issues with some motherboards. Namely; mb's with NForce4 chipsets. AuzenTech HDA X-PLOSION is supposed to be quite good but I don't know much about it, just have read it is a good soundcard.

If you are just wanting it for 2channel stereo music then this cheap Chaintech AV-710 apparently sounds just as good as that M-Audio Revolution. Never heard it myself though so can't say for sure if that is true but that is what people say.

I was lookin at some reviews for that card (the AuzenTech HDA X-PLOSION) and it seems to be a good card but it only supports dolby digital rather than EAX. ppl have commented that they don't like the drivers and it has bad support for the mic.

Creative cards are really the only choice if you're a serious gamer. If so, the X-Fi Xtrememusic would be a good match for you. If you aren't a gamer, then EAX will be completely useless to you anyways.

well I am a gamer (trust me... my friends can vouch for all my games) and like I said b4 the Creative cards don't work at all w/ the Gigabyte mobo I got now. I'm just gonna stick w/ the M-Audio soundcard unless theres some others that are as good as that or the AuzenTech HDA X-PLOSION.

Nope, your only other real choice would be the Turtle Beach Montego and I don't know how good that card is.

YES, i read the customer reviews. However, ppl on this forum said it's a good soundcard. Driver Support supposed to have improved; also don't forget that ppl had a lot of trouble with X-Fis also. :rolleyes:

Since you are considering the M-Audio 5.1 sound card you might want to consider the chaintech AV-710 as it has the same Via Envy chipset (a very good chipset for sound quality) but is a fraction of the price. I have one in my older Athlon XP rig and the sound quality is as good as 24bit gets.

I agree, they most certainly did.

ok, I gave in and got the M-Audio Revolution 5.1. It seemed to be working ok at first then when I was gonna install the drivers... it can't even find the damn card. I've tried to install the drivers with and w/o it in and still nothing. help... plz?

update: After working with my card (turns out thats not the prob) I'm having to get a new mobo ASUS A8N-E so I'll try the soundcard w/ that and if that doesn't work... I will RMA both the mobo and soundcard and just forget all this happend ^-^;;

yet another update: I had to send the ASUS mobo back to them (the company, not newegg) since I got some thermal grease in the CPU slot (that stuff it really sticky and it doesn't like me). they are suppose to be sending one back by this Fri and hopefully they do so.
