With the new smp out is vm still better? My i5-750 @3.8 is doing 10,000 to 11,000 ppd with the new smp. And i only have 2 gigs of memory
 
With having only 2 gigs of memory dropping the vm will free up more RAM.

If your getting 10k ppd in the VM your running the A3 core, and there is little diff between windows and linux with A3.

Is this a dedicated box or a main rig that happens to crank out good ppd?
 
SMP2 is far superior, especially with your amount of RAM. Linux SMP is no longer much better than Windows SMP, as it was with SMP1; in fact, now it may be the opposite slightly. And with a VM, your system has to deal with the overhead of running a whole new operating system on top of Windows, which takes up bandwidth and CPU cycles.
 
VM kept slowing my GPUs down, the new A3 core for WinSMP is not. Yeah the bigadv points bonus was nice, but if everything is getting bogged down it starts defeating itself.
 
The SMP2 core is yielding better ppd on my humble C2D E8400 @ 3.4 with 4 GB RAM

Win7 32-bit running a NF/VM ~ 1800-2000 ppd
Win7 32-bit running new SMP2 with -advmethods ~ 2600-3000 ppd (according to HMF... when I complete 10 units and the bonus points kick in)
 
SMP2 in Windows is better than running SMP1 or SMP2 in a VM. However, for those with 8 CPU threads or more, SMP1 -bigadv within a VM is still the best way to go as far as points are concerned.

Its my main box have and couple laptops running. both of them togethere only get about 500 to 700 ppd depending on if the kids turn them off or not

If this is your main box, ditch the VM and let the system breath a bit better.
