hey all...i just installed my second XFX 6600GT for my rig to complete SLI...i just ran 3dmark05 and got a score of 6194 at stock speeds for both on forceware 71.89. my temps as of right now are 43-44C on CPU 1 (which has a zalman 700 on it) and 51-52 on GPU2 (which has stock cooling which i will probably replace soon with another zalman) at idle. does everything look normal so far for my setup? should i download the new nvidia drivers as i thought i read it gives better sli performance (just not sure if it affects 6600gt's)? any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

oh i probably will overclock too, but i'll wait till i get a new cooler to do it as i don't want it running real hot right now...

update you driver to the new driver the 77.77 you well have less problems with the games

Yeah - looks good to me. Your temps are very good, and your stock 3dmark05 score looks right to me... with some overclocking and system tweaking you should be able to hit 7k I would think also. Welcome to the fun world of gaming on multiple GPUs. You might not notice big fps gains right off the bat, but you will see the performance gains when bumping the resolutions up and turning AA and AF on, etc... w00t. :D
 
well i installed those drivers and got a HUGE hit in performance. i dropped in 3dmark05 from that 6100 level to 4500!!!! so umm, any help with that would be greatly appreciated as i'm ready to revert back to the old drivers because i definitely don't want to run on something that has such a negative impact

Did you make sure you had AA/AF disabled?

Did you test out any games? See if those run faster? I don't think you'll be playing 3dMark 05.
 
yeah i'm pretty sure I had those disabled. Didn't change anything from the app after I installed the new drivers. I didn't have a chance to test games yet because I just ran it this morning before work. I'm gonna give em a go tonight when I get home and see if there's any difference.
 
Sounds like SLi is turned off now... like you are in single GPU mode... in my sig is a URL for an SLI troubleshooting tips guide thread I started. See the section for enabling multi-GPU mode... also, did you clean your driver install out with a driver cleaner before installing the new ones?
 
no i didn't, but usually never have a problem when i just uninstall normally and then install a new update.

and i'm pretty sure it's enabled as when i checked it before both cores were showing for their temps and that i saw it was enabled. that score is too high for just one card anyway, even if it is overclocked, because i think i was getting in the 3000's with just a single card.

but i will check out your sig and see if it helps when i can check at home
 
yeah - you're right... a 6800 vanilla would get about that.. sounds like it could be a botched driver install. clean them out, reboot with no drivers in, then install them again. good luck!
 
ok, will give that a try once i get home tonight from work. thanks for the help and will post later on tonight with the results
 
ok gave using driver cleaner a try with the new drivers and still got mid 4000's. so i uninstalled those, driver cleaner, and reinstalled the 71.89's, overclocked my cards to 550/1.10 and I just ran 3dmark05 again...ended with a 500 point gain almost with a new score of 6690! i think those new drivers just don't like my cards or somethin... oh well, i'll stick with these for now as i don't really use profiles for games anyway. lets hope the next batch isn't so buggy :mad:

next on my list: fiddle around with my new venice and overclock the heck out of it and see how more performance gain i can get :D

You still should try your games with both drivers and see which is faster. 3DMark is not a good measure of actual performance, you may get a lower score but better performance in games with the new drivers.
 
yeah - sounds like the new drivers are enabling some feature which is harping on your FPS... but the above post is right, in that, you should try games as 3Dmark is not always a reliable test... it's good though, don't get me wrong... but games are the most "real world" test you can give your (gaming) system... imo. :D
 
Make sure the driver is applied to both cards. I'd go to Device Manager and make sure the second card also has the latest driver applied. I had seen another user post horrible SLI results and it required that he manually update his second cards driver.

Good luck, and let us know how this continues to play out. Especially since I'm getting closer to adding my second 6600GT like you had.
 
ok well i'll have to give it another go tomorrow night after work...but after some playing of dungeon siege 2 on all the highest settings (i think) i didn't notice a second of lag and steady framerate...gonna have to give half life 2 a whirl tomorrow and see how it looks. will let you all know once i get a chance after work tomorrow
