New Shuttle Build Won't Post, Video Signal Not Recognized

EDIT: PC RUNNING GREAT! THANKS FOR THE TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS!

I just put together a Shuttle based system. I have built more PCs than I can count but this is my first small form factor system (for the most part work was done for me, I just added a few components). Having trouble and need some friendly advice.

PC fires up, all fans running on chassis, CPU and GPU. However, monitor is not getting a signal from GPU. If I unplug the digital monitor cable, the monitor notices and displays an error message. However, when video cable is connected to GPU, monitor screen goes black and monitor light blinks. So monitor recognizes a connection, but no signal is being identified.

I assume the GPU is not necessarily the problem. What is the best method to troubleshoot problems like this? There are no BIOS post messages at all.

thanks for your help

try using 1 memory slot?

have you tried a different gpu?

sorry to hear about your troubles, but I'll try to think of something helpful to suggest...i've had a few beers in me already

First thought is that your 9800GT is probably wtfpwning the crappy little Shuttle power supply.

Also, first rule of "hey, why won't my new computer turn on?!" is to take out everything it doesn't need to boot. So, CPU + one stick of RAM + video card.

I will try taking out a memory stick and then strip out components to trouble shoot. If that fails then I'll have to pop in a less powerful GPU to test that theory. However, I spoke to several people running 9800 (or equivalents) in Shuttles w/o problem so the PSU should not be an issue. The PSU (albeit barely) meets the minimum specs for the GPU.

Thanks for the tips! I'll post back with my findings.

Go to the Shuttle XPC forum at SFFTech, they will be able to help you better, there's more people over there with shuttles.

Also having owned alot of shuttles, don't worry about the PSU they are extremely strong and efficient for their size. Over at SFFTech, they are running 9800 GTX and HD 4870 on your same PSU with Quad Core CPU.

UPDATE:

Took out one stick of RAM (I have 2 x 2GB RAM sticks).. PC boots fine. However, PC is seeing the one RAM stick as 512MB instead of 2 GB which is odd. I am going to check BIOS to see if there is a setting I need to change or something.

If you have another memory-compatible system handy, take them one at a time and run Memtest.

PC is up and running fine. Vista recognizes all 4 GB RAM in the OS. I guess the BIOS msg is a fluke.

Thanks for all of the tips!

Very nice to hear...and to all those people who call Shuttle PSU's crappy...my Q6600 @ 3GHz has no problem at all running alongside my HD4870 with the stock 400W PSU that comes in the SP35P2 Pro.

Good to hear that everything worked out for you Moderndaydruid, but it saddens me to see yet another thread where the first thing on peoples minds is that our PSU's can't handle the rest of our systems. :(
