As announced several months ago, Sharp has recently introduced the first 32-inch 1080p model on the Western market, the LC-32D62U.

Impressive 2000:1 contrast ratio and excellent 6ms response time. Inputs: 2 HDMIs, 2 components, 3 composites, S-video, and built-in NTSC and HD tuners. Retails for around $1200 + shipping.

However, 1080p is a waste for TV use on such a "small" screen. Also the lack of a VGA input (but why??) may make it unappealing to Xbox 360 users.

It's still a great buy for computer and PS3 users, though, not to mention for watching HD DVD or Blu-Ray titles.

If it can take 1080p over component (which most tvs can't) then the xbox360 users may have a reason to buy it. But only if.

[edited] There's a model for gamers: LC32GP1U

AQUOS HDTV with Game-enhancing capabilities (models LC-37GP1U, LC-32GP1U)
Sharp has introduced a new Full HD 1080p AQUOS series, which includes special features that
enhance the game-playing experience. The GP1U series sports a “game mode” which optimizes
the picture quality for game-playing, as well as a custom-designed remote control that allows
the user to quickly “jump” into the game mode, and access the side-placed terminals for easy
connections to video games. The game mode boasts a newly developed “Vyper Drive” feature,
which reduces lag time between the game console and the TV to be virtually imperceptible. The
32-inch panel boasts a 10,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, and the 37-inch an 8500:1, for deep
blacks and crisp picture quality; enhanced Fine Motion video circuitry for faster pixel response
time of 6ms; and wide viewing angles of 176 degrees, so users can view the television from
virtually anywhere in the room. They also include Sharp’s proprietary 4-wavelength backlight
system that provides a wider colour spectrum to achieve deeper, more vivid reds than was
previously possible. Additionally, both of the GP1U models include three HDMI™ inputs (with
one on the side) as well as two HD component terminals (one on the side), all of which are
compatible with 1080p signals from the latest video game devices. Both units in the series
feature Full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution and 10Wx2 audio for an unparalleled highdefinition
viewing and listening experience and are available in a piano black finish with
detachable bottom speakers. The LC-37GP1U and the LC-32GP1U will be available this spring
for an MSRP of $2,399 and $1,899 respectively.

according to the spec sheet it does support 1080p over the 2 component inputs.

So ian xbox 360 would work fine since vga and component both max out at 1080p and are both analog. Looks to be a nice monitor. Even better than the westy if it works as advertised.

Needless to say, the gamers' version costs a little too much: you can easily get a Westy 47" at that price...... unless, that is, 32" happens to be just the right size for you, which is the case with more than a few people. Hadn't I already bought a Westy 37" two months ago (and TOTALLY happy with it), I'd be considering this. :)

this would be better since the screen is smaller but the res is the same as the westy 37..might trade my westy 37 for this one...

Hmmm I just ordered the Westinghouse 37w3 today. I could still cancel it. Does anyone actually own one of these yet?

Yeah that gamer edition is wetting my appetite.... any owners please come forward... the westy might me a little big for me as a pc monitor but this may fit the bill

Anybody find a better price than $1500?

So far its not worth it, especially when you can get the 37" westy for 1k.

dont cancel the westy.. i have one and its seriously a flawless screen. I use it for my computer and xbox 360 and watch movies on it a lot. It's an amazing screen and you get tons of 1080p inputs and the 37in size is great.. especially when watching movies

Like with everything, it all depends on one's needs. 37" hits my sweet spot, so I would never buy this Aquos (especially now I have the Westy). But if 32" does hit your sweet spot, I think this is as close as it gets to perfection.

Ex Westy here and it was a little overkill for me. I already have a 57" HDTV for regular movies/TV so was using the Westy mostly for PC/console. In about 4 months, I found it a little bigger and have been looking for something between 24"=>32" and just ordered a Dell 2407.

I'll give the 2407 a shot since I only paid $650 incl taxes and if the Sharp gets good reviews, I might send the Dell back and get the Sharp.

I work for Circuit City and our store just got a few of these in a couple days ago. I'm interested in this model for myself so I'll see if I can test it with a PC as as soon as we put one on display.

I'll have an update by the weekend.

Thanks,

Also, the price isnt that bad. circuitcity.com has it listed for $1399.00. Hopefully I can find some coupons/etc to bring it below $1200

Amazon has a very competitive price on the non gamer version of this set.... Would the gamer version really be needed? Would it be worth the extra money? Just thinking out loud.. :)

• 3 composite video
• 1 S-video
• 2 component video (accepts signals up to 1080i)
• 2 HDMI v1.2 digital audio/video inputs (accepts signals up to 1080p)

Is what that link provided by the op says. Am I missing where it says 1080p over component? They change it?

n/m, says it on that gaming edition one. Isn't breaking certain copyright(or some type) laws doing 1080p over component?

In this case no. Xbox360 allows 1080P over component but it restricts DVD to 480P and HD-DVD to 540P or something like that.

Allowing 1080P component input on the TV is not violating any copyright. It's the output source that carries the responsibility...I think.

No, it's not breaking anything. Devices like upscaling DVD players are not allowed to upscale protected content (i.e. DVDs) to 1080p over component. That's why it is common to rip a DVD, remove all of the protection, and reburn it just to be able to upscale it.

Buy.com currently has both the LC32GP1U 32" and the 37 inch of the gamer version for pretty good prices.....I'm seriously thinking about taking the leap.... 32 may be my sweat spot for PC/XBOX360w HDVD and PS3 maybe.... I kinda want to wait to see one in action first

Westy 37" is too big for my desk and I'm looking at this series for PC use. My hope is that with a full 1920 x 1080 res its pixel density would result in even better PC use than the Westy....thoughts?

Here's a thread that has some more info on this new Sharp series.

32" @ 1080p with HDMI. I Like!

Most crisp 1080P PS3/X360 experience ever!

32" is the sweet spot for me. This one is a bit still pricey but if the reviews are positive, i might end up getting one.

I feel 37" is too big as a computer screen, though i've been eyeing the 37" westy for about $1000.

I agree dandrop...

Been researching for months, bought a westy 37" as a pc monitor, had it for a month, but found the size too cumbersome and tiring for detailed video editing work, and the black levels left a whole lot to be desired, even after extensive tweaking. But I have to admit, gaming was tons of fun on it. So I sent it back with great reluctance and figured I'd wait for a while and do some more research.

I got the itch about a month later and I seriously needed to replace my aging Samsung 20" crt which was slowly dying on me. Saw a 24" Gateway at BB and bought it after seeing some fairly positive reviews on it, took it home, set it up...and it "disappeared" on my desk. After having the 37" it dwarfed in comparison...it went back.

And so it went until I ran across some articles being released from CES and there were some interesting new options. When the 32" Sharp was released a buddy of mine bought one and I went over to take a look at it and it was exactly what I had been looking for.

I purchased the LC32GP1U for myself from OneCall about a week ago and all I can say is that it fits my needs perfectly. Perfect size, excellent for games (I'm into sims, fps, you name it I love gaming) no lag, no ghosting...love it! But for work related type stuff (I work in the broadcasting industry and have my own production company) it really shines! I can lay all my tools side by side on the screen and still have room to move. But what's really important is, I don't feel overwhelmed by the size of the monitor on my desk like the 37" Westy (which is still a great monitor for the price btw) so I got lots of room for work...but when it comes time to play....it's excellent when you need to "get your head in the game".
And it has a tuner built in to boot....

Looks sharp, movies look great, bigger and cheaper than Dell's 30" or the Apple...this monitor totally rocks...it's definitely a keeper!!

Good luck hunting......

Scorp - How does browsing and text look on the 32" when using it for your PC monitor?? Over in that AVS thread I posted a link to, a member (Fiste) has the 32" as well and mentioned that browsing didn't look so hot on it but I wonder if he was in the wrong mode or something. Is it acceptable to you?....better than just acceptable? I'm wanting to buy it and use it only as a PC monitor but would really appreciate some insight first. Thanks

pics will be nice scorp

Hi Champ

I have no issues with browsing, everything is very sharp, I have no idea how he has his set up...but I have absolutely no problems with this monitor for primary pc use. As I mentioned before, I had a 37" westy and the first set looked fine but the bezel had separated from the screen, so I returned it...the second one had severe backlight issues and I returned that one.
Obviously all lcds have issues, it's the technology...I guess you have to hope you get one that has less issues. Even the extremely expensive Sony's are prone to problems.

I really like this monitor...fits my needs perfectly.

Sorry, wish I could post pics but March and April are crazy work months and I'm swamped with work, but I guess that's a good thing. Good luck and happy hunting.

Cheers

Thanks for the response Scorp - I'm glad to hear that using it as a PC monitor is acceptable!! I think I will be ordering mine tomorrow morning. Buy.com has them under 1300$ shipped. I wish Newegg had them....I love dealing with them.

Just beware of Buy... http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Buy
Go with Crutchfield instead: $1299 shipped, and their rating on RR is impressive to say the least: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Crutchfield I bought my Westinghouse 37" and couldn't be happier. Real pros.

Scorp,
Thanks for the 'review' buddy. I am itching to get this and i feel that the Sharp has all the requirements that I'm looking for.

Went looking at HDTV's at circuit city today and this was the best looking screen on the aisle, out of 18 LCD panels. Color is all about the way the staff had it set, but motion and edges were gorgeous. Next time one of you guys goes in, check out the viewing angle, colors are spot on when viewing the panel at an almost perpendicular angle.
This set costs twice what I want to spend....But unless I find something significant and negative about the gamer version, it's probably what I will wind up getting. I think I'm in love!

Hmmmm......price is a little cheaper than a Dell 3007WFP.....I need to figure out which to buy.....Argh! I'm not much of a gamer so it would just be used as my computer monitor running at 1920x1080. heeeeelp! :)

This thing cannot do 1920x1080 past 30Hz to 50 Hz,trying to drive it past 50hz will cause the set to malfucntion.I went down to Future Shop and looked at,as I am planning to grab a new LCD in April for gaming, and figured if the price was under 1500 Cdn,I would grab it.
The manual/AVS Forums, and the sales rep @ the store all say the same thing :(
