I’m about to invest in a new SFF to replace an aging shuttle system. These are the components so far but there are somethings I would welcome some advice on…

These are the components that are fairly certain (but comments/feedback/experience still welcome)

Case - SG01 Black Evolution with 3x80mm asaka amber fans
Power - Enermax 500W liberty modular
CPU - AMD X2 4800+
Memory - 2GB (most likely corsair TwinX Pro LED)
DVD - Black Pioneer DVR111 reduced length
HD - 320GB Seagate 7200.10
GFX - 7900GTX - most likely XFX, ASUS running at stock or slightly above stock speeds

This is where things are a bit more hazy:

Motherboard
a) ASUS A8N-VM-CSM (concern here is that I’m read this board has some heat issues) - now shelved
b) Foxconn 6150K8MA-8EKRS (never ever had a foxconn board but this seems to be a popular pick)
c) Gigabyte GA-K8NMF-9 (seems to be a solid board) - now shelved
d) MSI K8NGM2-IL
e) MSI K8NGM2-FID

and now it gets interesting…

with the GFX pushing hot air directly out the back, I plan the top two fans to be air intake and the HD fan to be pushing out. This leaves the CPU cooling:

most likely...
a) Passive cooling - NT06 + power supply cooling only (will I fry my chip!)

alternatives...

b) Active cooling - NT03 with or without SUGO crossflow fan (but can the hot air be directed out the side? no motherboard looks like this can be seated front -> back! Which seems crazy with the crossflow fan specifically designed to shove hot air out the back
c) Active cooling using something like a Zalman (which seems popular - never used them before) - presumably these are too big to also add the crossflow.

Also considering the slverstone FP52B auto fan controller - anyone have experience of this or recommend an alternative?

At this stage I’m not looking for overclocking but more for a quieter system running as cool as possible. Suggestions on the max temperatures that can be run without signficantly shorting component life would also be useful.

Looking to buy this week probably....

Thanks all

looks good (expensive..yikes...if you are gonna send that kinda money look at the Qmicra case) .

Stay away from the ASUS board...too many issues right now. I'd go with the MSI or Biostar. As for cooling, I'm actually about to get started on looking at different CPU coolers in the SG01 (for www.sffclub.com)....The SG01 has always had heat problems so we will see how it goes.

I've used both the Asus and the Foxconn and keep going back to the foxconn as its a fantastic board. Used it in 3 machines now and everytime its stable and fast. My own machine is happy @ 290HTT for 2.9GHz overall

The Foxconn is good stuff...depends if you want to OC or not..since you are not, I'd go with the MSI.

I've used the Biostar, Asus, and MSI 6100/6150 boards and the DFI RS482 Xpress 200 boards. So far I like the MSI the best, then the DFI.

To the OP: No, you won't fry your chip using the NT06 cooler as long as the Liberty has a 120mm fan on the bottom, it works well with the x2 4800+. And stay away from the Asus board. Tis not a stable board. Wait until Asus rev's it a couple more times. ;)

Thanks to all those that have replied so far.

I really like the style of the Silverstone case so I'll have to stick with that ;)

From the advice so far, the asus is definately shelved and the gigabyte replaced with the MSI as an alternative to the Foxconn. My supplier has two listed although only one in stock (K8NGM2 -IL / -FID). From a brief comparison I've done one appears to be NF410 and the other NF430 - does this make any difference when replacing the GFX anyway?

Interesting both these have 1000Mhz listed as the FSB whilst the Foxconn has 2000Mhz - does this make any significant performance difference?

To MrE: The liberty sure does have a 12cm fan - one thing that I did check after reading a few posts on these forums. One thing I was unsure about is whether the 620W would be any better at cooling than the 500W? I sure don't need the extra output but would go for it if it meant better cooling. Also I'm interested in if you ran any other cooler prior to the NT06 and if your experience of it is good? Finally, why the SLI board for a single GFX - future proofing or existing component?

Thanks again

I had a Zalman CNPS-7700 before replacing it with the NT06. The problem I ran into with the Zalman were two fold: One, the fan made a lot of noise due to the "pocket" of resistance created between the PSU and the Zalman fan directions. Second, temps would never stay consistant. In one instance, turning the fan speed down on the Zalman drops my temps by 3c! Thats when I said the heck with it and bougtht the NT06.

Now, I just need to replace the fan on my 7900GTX and we are good to go. That is by far the noisiest component in my case.

As far as the motherboard SLI setup? Cause I wanted an nForce4 board that was stable, and from comments in the EVGA thread this board could handle that requirement.
