New setup - Rads, enough or too much?

I'm putting the finishing touches on my first WC rig. It's built off the Asetek Waterchill setup.

I'm only cooling the proc and a single GPU (AMD BE 5000+ and ATI X1950XTX).

The kit came with 1 Black Ice Pro (120) radiator. After reading I started second guessing if that would really be enough.

So I picked up another rad, a Black Ice Extreme (120).

Would using them both be overkill, or should I use just one or the other?
 
Don't pick either one and use both since a single 120 radiator will only be enough to cool a single component. However, make sure the pump is strong enough to push thru 2 radiators and be prepared to replace it if it doesn't...

Besides pressure drop, is there really any benefit to running a single two fan rad instead of 2 single fan rads?

I found these specs for my pump 1020l/h with a max head of 240cm. Not that I really understand or have much to compare too.. :)

1. ) Could possibly be using less tubing and barbs
2. ) Depending on your case, it could be easier to place a 2fan rad than 2x1 fan rad
 
Sounds good to me then. Placement was partially a concern with a two fan unit. If I went that way I would end up messing around with slim fans, and fitment issues.

So I'm thinking Pump/Res > Rad 1 > CPU > Rad 2 > GPU > Pump/Res
 
Best positioning is:

Pump -> CPU - > Rad 1 -> GPU -> Rad 2 -> Back to Pump/Res

The pump is not required to be before the CPU but is good practice.
 
Dang! Glad I did some extra measuring!

I'm not going to be able to fit those dual rads like I wanted.

Looks like the biggest single rad I can make fit will be the Black Ice Stealth 240..

Should this rad still be enough for my simple setup?
 
You should get decent temps with a 2 fan rad as long as you have a good set of fans on there.

With that rad you'll probably need some high output 120s.. slap a rheostat on there and you'll be good to go. Even high output 120's still have kind of an 'air' noise to them and not like a hairdryer so you should be fine.

When you sleep just tune the dial down.

If I use a dual fan rad, I'm going to be stuck using 2 yate loon 20mm thick fans. (60cfm at 28db). The fans will also be sucking thru the rad instead of pushing..

Talked to some other folks on the forum with the same case, looks like a Swiftech MCR220 QP will fit, but it's going to be a very tight squeeze with my mobo.

Would the swiftech be any better?
 
The Swiftech is definitely better so it's worth trying to fit it in. IIRC, the BIS and Swiftech is within 5mm all around so if you can fit the BI Stealth 240 in it, you can fit a MCR220 as well.
 
should work with one 120mm rad , but dont expect the temp to be much better than stock air and you'll need a high cfm fan , which means noise . If youre going for quiet and much better cooling than stock air ...yes you'll need two 120mm rad or one 240mm. The swiftech rad are a good choise as they are a little smaller in overall size than the BI , cheap and good performance .
 
I would say.

PUMP->RAD->CPU-RAD2->GPU->RES->back to PUMP

While I am not an engineer, I thin it's safe to assume that even though the pressure throughout the system is fairly constant, you still lose some pressure as you get further away from the pump. You want most of that pressure coming into the CPU to remove the heat at a faster rate. Forcing pressure through a radiator to the pump will nullify this making it a less recommended setup.

The thickness is where it pinches me, To place it optimally over the fan cutouts, I'm limited to 30mm.

If I use the Swifttech unit, the thickness is going to make me position it so the fan cutouts don't line up well.

Wish I could find a review site comparing the two rads against each other...
 
So I figured out a 3 fan setup that will work for me with two rads.

A Black Ice Stealth 240 and the Black Ice Pro 120 (already have).

Problem, I accidently ordered the x-flow version of the stealth 240. I can still make it fit, but not with the extra 120 rad in there. The fitting will get in the way.

Would I be better off returning it for the non-cross flow version and going with my original plans, or just using one high flow rad?

I ran into another issue with my Asetek cpu block not fitting, I have a D-Tek Fuzion on the way.
