New Setup - Need some help...

So my setup is complete except for one thing... my vid card which has me asking some questions....

So I wasnt able to buy enough ramsinks initially (thought only needed 7 instead of 14) and have my block on with only 7 heatsinks on... Heres the question... Evga Precision shows the GPU at 51 (without side case fan on) and 48 with it on blowing over the ram sinks at idle... Once any load is put on it goes through the roof, I stopped it at 80 but it was definately going to climb higher. So at this point the question is how is the GPU temp measured? Is it just the GPU which is under a water block or does it use the ram temp in some way shape or form?? The ram is definately getting pretty hot (checked by finger) but its odd that the GPU is whats reporting this... I figure even with a bad mount or to much grease theres no way I should be running 80C + and 50 idle.
 
id say return the block and replace it with a full coverage block.
 
What GPU and block do you have? What is the rest of your watercooling setup? Are you cooling your CPU in the same loop, and if so what CPU is it, what clocks/voltages? Is there anything else in the loop? Before returning it, try a remount, those temperatures are certainly too high.

It won't use the RAM temperature at all. At least my 4870X2 has separate sensors for the GPU, RAM, voltage regulators, etc. so I can see the temperature of all these components.
 
well if the temps go down when he has air blowing over it then it must be a ram temperature right? if the gpu is covered by the block i doubt blowing air over the block would lower the gpu temp more than half a degree. i feel like the high temp hes seeing is the ram temp. ogre are you sure there arent multiple temperatures being reported? he def has nvidia if its an evga. cant tell past that.
 
Why don't you try using Rivatuner or Everest? Both of them clearly label every temperature that's reported so it's impossible to mix them up. Post some screenshots. Here's what mine looks like at idle, you can easily tell which temperature is which.
