Well I am looking to be building a few "fileservers" here in the none to distant future I have a basic plan layed out with hardware for them though I am having some issues tracking down a suitable motherboard and CPU for it.

Here is the copy paste from the stickie, just looking for some suggestions/input.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Serving files over ethernet
2) What's your budget? Would like to keep CPU & motherboard under $450 if possiable
3) Where do you live? CANADA :(
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? Motherboard & CPU
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? I have everything else.
6) Will you be overclocking? No.
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have? Headless
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Shortly (within 2-3 months or less)
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? ATLEAST 4 PCI-E 8x slots, 4+ sata ports, dual gigE would be nice.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? Yes.

Basically just looking for some ideas/suggestions, since they will be fileservers a fast CPU is NOT needed... hence wanting to keep it on the cheap, no need to drop more than I need on the CPU/Mobo.

From looking around a bit the best option thusfar looks like an Intel S3420GPLC, with a Xeon x3430 Price for them comes out to ~$480 CDN... a bit on the costly side but I cant seem to find a cheaper alternative :(

***EDIT*** Never mind.... that motherboard only has 3 PCIE slots >.< damn pictures of diffrent models

Anywho ill see what direction you folks can point me in :)

This is just a file server?
How many clients will be accessing it simultaneously?
What will it be hosting (databases?)?
What controller cards do you plan on using?

What's with the need for 4 x PCI-Ex8/16 slots?

Just fileserving.
First box probobly 5-8 clients speed wont be an issue here, Second/Third boxes probobly around a dozen VM's SQL will be one of them (possiably two) though these may be moved to over solutions.
One will be hosting just raw files for storage/streaming (music, movies, images, etc, long term storage stuff)
Second and third box's(with more nics and faster drives) will be exported via iSCSI over ethernet for my VM cluster. (think poor mans SAN)
HBA's these boxes will be running software raid (ZFS / Solaris)

What's with the need for 4 x PCI-Ex8/16 slots?

HBA Card
Expander
Quad Port NIC
Quad Port NIC

The first box would be fine with 3-5 NIC ports, the second and third boxes will need 6-8 i think would be a nice number, since there will be a bunch of VMs accessing it, a couple for failover, and a dedicated monitor line or something.

I also dont want to max out all available PCI-E slots... one extra would be nice incase i need something int he future.

Also yes all boxes will ONLY be fileserving... so a low clocked dualcore should be fine... if i could only find one >.<
