This morning I tried to enter my main hard disk.. I heard a terrible marble-rolling-in-a-little-box noise, the disk didn't respond and after waiting a bit, the disk was gone. (Meaning that the pc didn't recognize it anymore.) After boot up all was fine, but I wanted a better solution for my data storage.
I'd want a RAID 1 (edit) and with this solution I want to be able to expand in the (near) future.
So, the 2 disk raid setup my motherboard offers me will not enough. Therefor I was thinking of buying a sata raid card. I'm not familiar with this sort of hardware and a little advice on this concept is welcome. I did find some cards of which I know they are good, Areca... This does get me in a higher price range (and is only PCI-x). After more searching, I found the much cheaper Highpoint cards (and available for normal PCI). Question is, is Highpoint any good? And how about linux support/drivers, any trouble getting those cards to run on linux?
As you might have noticed, the PCI/PCI-x part is an issue. I don't have a PCI-x port on my server, so choosing for Areca will not only cost me more on the card, but will force me to look into some new motherboard and other things as well... Which will be a little overkill, or not? I do want a reliable solution, so maybe this is the only way.
Any other remarks or recommendations will be highly appreciated.
