kk, my connection has been worse since we changed from a 4-port to a 8-port Linksys router, so now all these sites and streaming medias are not loading, or loading extremely slow.

Is the performance supposed to be so much worse?

The obvious question do you have more computers hooked up and are they all on the net at the same time? And have you tried upgrading the firmware?

I have a 4 port linksys router, and it sucks. My connection blows because of it. When i connect my modem directly to a PC, the thing flys.

I think that its not that the new router sucks as much as maybe linksys routers suck. My no-name router i had before this was a lot better (until it died, that is).

But then again, i havn't had experince with many routers, let alone many linksys routers.

BTW, i have the DI-604 i think.

*shrugs*

I never had one problem ever with my Linksys 4-port BEFSR41, and its about 2 years old, at least.

I'm an utter newb for this, anyways...

For upgrading firmware, it asks me to put in a Server, Password, and File. Where do I find that? I don't even know if there is a password for whatever server....

Server is the IP address for your router (192.168.1.1 if you have a BEFSR41), password is admin by default, unless you changed it and file is the update file.

Thanks for the help all :)

Though I get a new error when trying to upgrade:
"Failed to update the data into flash ROM, please retry."

clueless, never seen this error before.

Did you have all 8 computers on the network at one before? If one of them isn't running kazaa and leeching all the bandwidth away I would also check for something like welchia or other worm/virus killing your connection. Maybe try plugging them in one at a time and seeing if having one in particular plugged in causes it to slow down.

My buddies Linksys router is crap. It will gradually slow down over a 3 week period to the point the internet does no longer work. If you power cycle it the problem clears up then repeats. I hate linksys. Even though they are now bought by Cisco it will take a while for them to update all the products. Until then, I'm not touching it with a ten foot pole.

P.S. Going from 4 port to 8 port switch should not effect performance whatsoever. Now that's with the caveat that you don't have twice as many PC's trying to access the internet increasing your network load. :)

Me neither, speeds are the same whether connected to the router or not. It works great!

Hey Malingjc,
Does your router have two other ports other than the four?
I was on the Linksys website and the 4 port BEFSR41 only had one other port other than the 4.
I think my two extra ones say Ethernet and WAN.
Any idea?

Mine has WAN (goes to cable/DSL modem) uplink (shared with port 1, uplink to a switch which I use), and ports 1-4.

Update the firmware. It will fix that.

im a big fan of linksys for standard home networks, i have a linksys 4 port stacked with a wireless b access point and it does great....though i am switching to a cisco based setup, but that's cause im a network junkie...my idol is fleecom haha

i had a dlink di-704 and it took a crap on me. For the last year and a half i've been using an Asante FR3004LC with good results.

I'm thinkin about getting a new router and will probably go with 3com or cisco.

Been a while since I looked here.
For a while I've been using my old 4-port router, now it's back to the POS 8-port because of more ppl in the house during summer etc...

I've done several bandwidth speed tests and for each one it says the cable connection with my Linksys 8-port router (BEFSR81 V3) is MEDIOCRE; it's as fast as a damn 56k so it seems.

I upgraded the firmware to the latest version, that didn't seem to help... I want to say the hardware if faulty because the 4-port worked perfectly fine, and so now I am back where I started.
I also tried some of the suggestions about optimizing a connection, I still see no difference because the bottom line is there's something wrong with my router and I still dunno if it can be fixed.

It's hopeless, I'm doomed never to download from a webpage again :(

I prefer Linksys for home networks too. I've been running a WRT54G for a few months now and it's great. I might have to give some of the firmware alternatives a try soon and see how they are.

Why the hell do so many people have problems with Linksys routers?

I have 2 and have bought at least 5 for family and they all work just fine

You just have to know what you're doing, setup the network properly, forward the appropriate ports for software and whatnot and you won't have any problems....

I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, but i think a lot of it is user error

Most people post about problems, so it LOOKS as they are so many problems, fact is that linksys has sold a boat ton of routers, and I would think that a small number of them really have problems, even though that number will be large to the the amount they have sold. compaired to others that sell the same stuff...

Same here. Plus I use their routers for everyone that I set-up a home network for.
