A motherboard/machine supporting:

AMD64 FX53 or 55
DDR2
PCI Express Video

I really need a new machine and don't want to wait much longer. I know there isn't much of a speed difference between agp/pci-e & ddr/ddr2, but I'd rather wait than rebuild in 1-2 months.

Thanks all!

nowhere. Only intel mobos have pci-e and ddr2. (currently, at least)

ddr 2 is really not all that great at this point. youll proabbly upgrade again before its even worth going to ddr 2.

Abit is coming out with a board soon, though it is not DDR2 which is not that great anyway... So there you go. As for FX chips, dude, go 939 A64 3500 and enjoy the serious stable oc's that are all over the place....

if u dont get pci express and ddr2 u can still have a better system than any intel config and most likely the best system for gaming possible. and that will last you atleast 18 months, possible u would need to is upgrade graphics cards if necessary, or want to play with setting at highest possible.

ddr2 is not going to used by amd becasue its procs get mroe preformance out of better timings than higher frequencies. you dont need the latest, most expensive technology to have the best system.

This guy hit the nail on the head... :D

since athlon64s use an onboard memory controller that means that they are unable to support ddr2 unless they make some radical change to the processor. and for the time being you can get ddr ram that can scale upwards to 300mhz cheaper than you can get ddr2, and by that point i doubt you're really stretched for bandwidth.

not true, all they'd have to do is some minor tweaks to the memory controller, which is a very small part of the die. ;)

edit: i forgot to mention that a64's love low latency, so ddr2 isn't the greatest of ideas until it gets to ddr2-800 or so.. then maybe the speeds will negate the absolute latency enough to make it worthwhile

Exactly. That's what the Anandtech article stated as well. Why don't they just do it if it's that simple.

The question then remains: do the pci-express w/ fx53 next month when a few boards offer nVidia nForce4 or go Intel, who already has ddr2/pci-e and heat my home at the same time ;). I just don't want to pay an arm and a leg for EMT64 when I've been very happy with my old AMD T-bird.

Are the rumors true about the latest P4's including 64bit extension, but just not enabled? I may look at that if it's just a bios update away. I'm just thinking ahead and I'm not big gamer, but do video editing/encoding.

Thanks.

first, i'd stick with amd. it's better for gaming anyhow.
second, i think it's actually physically disabled on the die, no bios update will make it work. but don't quote me on that.

Yes and no and yes. errm what?

All the Prescott's have the EM64T or whatever Intel call their copy of x86-64.

But it is disabled and can not be enabled on any but the ones with an "F" at the end of their model number. see: http://www.intel.com/products/server/processors/server/pentium4/ and: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2152

And the only chipsets that support this are the: Intel® 925X Express Chipset and the Intel® E7221 Chipset.

Point of interest there is also a Pentium 4 "J" that supports the NX register but not the rest of the x86-64 instruction set. (the P4 "F" also supports NX as well as the entire x86-64 set) I expect the "J" P4's to just quietly disappear as there is no real need for the beast, it is kind of a "red headed step child." see: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20041005-4272.html
