This is going to be my first build. Trying to build a nice gaming system for under $1000. Suggestions anyone?

Id advise going to a local pc store/bestbuy/walmart/etc. to buy yhr keyboard and mouse. That way you can see and feel it before buying it.

get one stick of 512 instead, so you can upgrade easily in the future.

that wouldn't utilize the dual ddr though. would I notice that very much?

Just buy 2 sticks of 512. Dilema solved!

The price of the memory looks a little steep. Unless you are going to be doing some extreme overclocking, you could cut back a bit there and bump something else. 164 bux for 2 X 512 3200 from Newegg.

You could bump up to an NF7-S and use a Sata hard drive. Get a little more speed and bragging rights for a modest increase in cost.

Ok made the following changes so far:

Lite-On 52x32x52 CD-RW 34.00
Lite-On 16x DVD-Rom 32.00
Corsair XMS 512mbx2 DDR PC3200 207.00
Powercolor Radeon 9700Pro 219.00
Antec 120mm Fan 19.00 s/h included

I've used the multimedia keyboard/optical mouse before and like it's feel.

The psu is rated at +5V/+3.3V combined output of 230Watts max.
Since it's included with the case I'll use it for now unless you're sure it's not enough to run this system.

I downgraded the Vid card a little to incorporate the 1gig memory, is this a wise decision?

New total 987.47

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.

I'm hard headed but not stupid, thank you for the advice
buying the Fortron 400w FSP400-60PNU-R1 60.00 s/h included

new total 1047.47

I hope this covers it :D

your 2500+ is $90<<comes w/ HSF right?
your getting ThermalRight 900A
why not save 5 bux and ditch the stock HSF

Or... save 40 bucks and USE the stock heatsink.

Works fine for me.

ok here's the thing... you had some nice mushkin black RAM when you started the list. are you going to overclock? the mushkin will overclock much better than the cheapo ram. if you DO plan on overclocking buy the aftermarket HSF. if not, save some $ and get the cheap RAM and use the retail heatsink/fan. dual channel memory is cool, but it doesn't make a huge performance difference. the 1GB ram will make more of a difference over 512MB than dual over single channel memory configuration. as far as the video card goes...that is really up to you. the 9700pro is a great card, but the price difference isn't really huge between the two cards, so if you have the extra $ (which i notice is less than the price of a new game) go for the 9800pro.

enough babbling from me...

I do plan to overclock

changed the following to allow more money for ram
Vantec Aeroflow 28.99 s/h included
Sapphire Radeon 9600Pro 179.00

I want 1 gig of memory so can anyone suggest ram that will allow me to OC for around $250?

ok, narrowed it down to these two:
Kingston HyperX (Dual Pack) 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 $252

Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, Low Latency (Twin Pack) 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 - Retail $250

I checked the compatibility test at Abit to see if either of these would work with my system and they aren't on the list.

Is this list just old or something? will either of these work with my system?
