Hey guys, it's been a while since i've bought a new processor/motherboard so I figured here would be a great place to come ask for some help. I looked in the hot deals section and found what seems to be a great deal on a motherboard/processor combo:

I called them up and asked if it had hyperthreading because it didn't mention it on the site and the guy said it did, and it's a prescott. (sp?)

Does this look like a good base setup for a new computer? The last processor I bought was a 1600+, so it's been a while, and the last one I bought was an AMD so I don't know much about pentiums, but from what I've read, this seems to be a good deal. Let me know what you guys think, thanks!.
 
What's the computer going to mainly be used for? I ask this because I mainly game on my machine and I feel that I went the wrong route. I should've gotten an AMD Athlon64 3500+ instead of a 3.2ghz Prescott. If you are going to mainly be doing gaming go the AMD route, im a hard core intel fan (always have been) but intel just doesn't have what it takes to keep up in the gaming scene anymore. I even bought a graphics card that is bottlenecked by my processor (X800Pro) so if you read any reviews, read some where they benchmark games AMD vs. Intel and real games, not synthetic benchmarks like 3Dmark03 or anything, I mean games like FarCry, Doom3, etc.

Oh, if you're mainly compliling video and multitasking with many programs than go the Intel way, other than that you should be going with AMD, imo of coarse.
 
it's a good mid-end system, and just about the best deal on the Intel side right now. go amd though. look at 754's, 939 is nowhere near mature. That system will do you fine, but look at amd some more before you jump on it. Get the ram tho, you'll use it in any system you get, and that's a pretty good deal.
 
Well I'll mostly be gaming, but I also do a lot of video editing/multimedia work with flash and photoshop. Anyone know of any good deals on mobo/processor combinations for amd going on right now?

They have this at frys right now, where the memory is at too. I have to call to see if it's in stock, but I already called about the memory and that's in stock. Is it really worth it to chuck out the extra money to get the 64? Is there a pretty big increase in speed, or would this still be pretty good?

btw if you go to your nearby fry's buy 2 512 sticks for 59.99 after 20 bux rebate (each ) it'll b cheaper than buying 1 gb together it same thing 2,

also they have 3.2 with 800 fsb and hyper for 250 it better than the 3 and it comes with some mobo i don't no which
 
Can you get both $20 rebates though? Do you send one to a friends or something?
 
If i were you (ya im not lol) i would sort of steer away from MSI only because i have seen some not so great reviews on the Neo boards. I would also get a 939 chipset, which you can get, for relatively cheap off newegg.com. I realise you're going to Fry's and looking around there and there's no problem with that, but the online shopping has a much better selection, if you don't mind waiting a week. Either way what you choose will be a nice gaming rig. I get good framerates in pretty much all the games I play with my rig, but I would try and steer the A64 way because of it's significant performance gains over the P4's of the same speed.

Ah, forgot to add I really like Gigabyte and ASUS motherboards, yeah MSI has some good ones, but I don't like the brands they use for components.
 
How long do you plan to keep this set up?

If you go the AMD route you loose hyperthreading........something to keep in mind ;)
 
Intel is great, I love my system to death. However, I am building a rig now just for gaming, and I am gonna go the AMD route more than likely. Both companies have their ups and downs, so why settle for one when you can have both :D
