Getting ready to start playing with RemoteFX at home but my old 5400 Xeon rig won't cut it, so a small upgrade will be needed. Thinking of using one of the Supermicro 1U GPU servers with lower cost consumer GPU's. The question is should I go with two $3-400 GPU's or four $1-200 GPU's on 8x PCIe. I am hoping to replace my main desktop and HTPC's with thin clients eventually if it works out.

I will only get one GPU to start with for proof of concept.
 
Do you have any links where I can learn about remote FX? is it only for Hyper-V right now?

what do you need to play with it?

basically it is just remote desktop with 3d acceleration?
 
We used a single GTX 460 in our VDI demo machine that supports RemoteFX and it works fine for us. We have 10 demo desktops that run various CAD and other GPU / 3D accelerated apps that are all running fine off the single 460.

Only downside to using normal GPUs other then cost is the need for 3U cases to get airflow and height requirements.
 
To those looking to RemoteFX to solve all your problems, remember, this is designed for a work environment, not to replace a home system.

For instance a normal streaming movie looks fine, and even windowed 720p looks fine, but fullscreen over 480p ends up getting choppy, even on a local gig connection. AutoCAD, Solidworks, etc all work fine, Photoshop is even able to use GPU acceleration, internet flash content looks really good. But I wouldn't use this at home to replace a HTPC or even my home desktop given the AV limitations. VMware view isn't much better. We demoed that as well and found that AV playback, and even gaming were possible, but the bandwidth required for these was too much to be able to host VDI.

@AMD_Gamer: To play with RemoteFX you need a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 machine running Hyper-V and Remote Desktop Services Virtualization Client. Then you need a windows 7 or windows server 2008 R2 guest machine. Your hypervisor needs a CPU capable of running SLAT (not sure what the AMD equivalent would be) which means that you need a minimum of a Core i series or Xeon 55xx / 56xx / 34xx / E3 xxxx series processor. You then need a dedicated AMD or nVidia GPU that is DX10 compatible. Then remember that each RemoteFX adapter requires 300mb of RAM per monitor per desktop (to run 1920x1200, you can run a lower max res with less RAM) so if you have a guest that is going to allow 2 monitors at 1920x1200 you need 600mb of GPU RAM for that machine. So it needs quite a bit of resources to run, but it is kinda cool if you decide to run a TS for remote users who need flash content or training videos

I have been playing with it for a few weeks now. Settled on a Supermicro 1026GT-TF, a pair of E5620's, 24gb RAM, 2x 80gb drives for boot, 2x 600gb velociraptors for VM's and a single 2gb GTX 560 Ti.

Just using it as a primary desktop for now, still working the bugs out. Finding the correct video settings for smooth playback has been a challenge and I have a intermittent issue where sound drops out and I have to reconnect to the VM. Still need to test it with my Mediaportal front ends and find a good zero client with a decoder.

I've been wondering about this. It's obviously not a full GPU passthrough... Is it even possible to assign 100% of that GPU's RAM to a single VM? Or is it always 300MB?
