new rig for gaming....

I'm about to buy a new rig, I'm thinking of the new quadcore (q6700), which will have its price slashed by the end of this month. This rig will be used mostly for games (Crysis, Alan Quake and heavy stuff). Of course, at least an 8800gtx is on the plan.

My question is very simple: in terms of gaming, should I stick with a quadcore or is the amd x2 6000+ sufficient to handle the newest games?

I don't think your going to have to waste anymore money for awhile. If anything get a beefy vid card, and 4 gigs of ram.

If that's what you have,which BTW is great, then wait for the games to be out and decide then based on the performance!

Don't go crazy upgrading without even knowing that you really need to buy newer hardware!
 
I'm a bit concerned about overhead that may be caused by the quadcore running single-core apps, even games for example.

Does Windows Vista support quadcore natively?
 
Are you going to possibly run anything that will max a quadcore? If not stick with what you got and be happy.
 
How often do you upgrade? Most games(with the exception of supreme comm.and like ) have just started using dual cores and i dont see them using four cores in another year or so. So basically if you're buying a quad core its gonna sit idle for a year especially if this rig is primarily for gaming.:)

If you upgrade once in four years then quad core seems like a wise choice otherwise go for the E6850 or 6750.

I thought the quad core that was being slashed in price was the Q6600 not the q6700?
