New raid array fast or full initilization

When you create a new raid array is it ok to use the fast initialization option. The full init can take days to complete. Are there any downsides to the fast init?

Full initialization will scan array, fast will not do that (like full format vs quick format of disk drive).

That is what I read but I cant find any disadvantages or dangers of fast init. So if you dont do the full init you could just gave a bad disk?

Isn't there a way to speed up the initialization? Do you have the BBU? Days is crazy. On linux software raid (used at work) I am seeing full initializations of 9 x 2TB drive raid 6 arrays in less than 9 hours on 3 year old core2quad desktop systems.

With most Raid controllers you have the option of a "background" init and you don't have to wait for the init to finish before you can use the array. You just don't get full performance until it does.

It might take days, but by reading and writing every sector of the array it can help indicate trouble spots on your drives before you commit valuable data to them. It won't find all errors, but if you have a drive that is failing out of the box it will likely find it.

I'd always choose the full initialization. Unlike a "format", you don't have to wait for it to finish and it can certainly help you. Very little downside.

Although if you do not wait and 3 drives are kicked out of the array during the initialization any initial work you do is lost. Although I would say that is highly unlikely to happen unless the delivery driver tossed the box around without regard to its contents.
