My current setup is a RocketRaid 4320 controller. It controls 5 2TB HITACHI hard drives in a RAID 5 array. Setup in an old DFI Motherboard with a 5000+ Black edition AMD processor.

Well the other day my raid card stopped working, and under close inspection i found that one of the little resistors or caps decided to fry on the board.

Can I use a new raid card to recover my data? Like just hook the hard drives up to a new controller and it can find the array? Or would a software approach be better? I ordered this Adaptec last night on ebay for a 150$ Hoping to use this card to recover my array and also expand in the future.

So on to the new build. I need a new server since my processor caps out on transcoding 1080p video for my PLEX media server. I need is a motherboard, processor, ram, cheap hdmi video card if not built in on motherboard, and PSU. Might have a spare PSU at home. Also i was looking for some suggestions on a big case to fit all these drives in. Computer will just be housing all media and will need a decent processor to transcode all the media on the fly.

I have been out of the market for a while so any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm not really bias on brands.
 
A card from a different manufacturer will most likelly not recognize the array.
 
I can always use software and just hook them up to the motherboard and recover the array i believe. Correct me if i am wrong.
 
<rant>HighPoint is the sleezies of RAID card manufacturer when it comes to lock in technology. I had a 2320 and will never purchase another product from HighPoint. When I heard about issues with HighPoint, I switch over to software RAID to ensure I could migrate my RAID to another system as my data volume grew. Even with software RAID, HighPoint still added proprietary data to my RAID, making the disk incompatible with my new build. Luckily, my card was still functional, allowing me to pipe the data over my LAN.</rant>

You will need another HighPoint card to recover your data. It simply will not work with another manufacturer or recovery software.

Are you 100% sure of this? If you are I might have to order one from Newegg or something then send it back after i get my data.
 
So I ended up buying a cheap 50$ Rocketraid adapter to get my array back up. Should be arriving sometime this week.
