320-stream processors, named ATI Radeon HD 2900

AMD has named the rest of its upcoming ATI Radeon DirectX 10 product lineup. The new DirectX 10 product family received the ATI Radeon HD 2000-series moniker. For the new product generation, AMD has tagged HD to the product name to designate the entire lineup’s Avivo HD technology. AMD has also removed the X-prefix on its product models.

At the top of the DirectX 10 chain, is the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT. The AMD ATI Radeon HD 2900-series features 320 stream processors, over twice as many as NVIDIA’s GeForce 8800 GTX. AMD couples the 320 stream processors with a 512-bit memory interface with eight channels. CrossFire support is now natively supported by the AMD ATI Radeon HD 2900-series; the external CrossFire dongle is a thing of the past.

The R600-based ATI Radeon HD 2900-series products also support 128-bit HDR rendering. AMD has also upped the ante on anti-aliasing support. The ATI Radeon HD 2900-series supports up to 24x anti-aliasing. NVIDIA’s GeForce 8800-series only supports up to 16x anti-aliasing. AMD’s ATI Radeon HD 2900-series also possesses physics processing.

New to the ATI Radeon HD 2900-series are integrated HDMI output capabilities with 5.1 surround sound. However, early images of AMD’s OEM R600 reveal dual dual-link DVI outputs, rendering the audio functions useless.

AMD’s RV630-based products will carry the ATI Radeon HD 2600 moniker with Pro and XT models. The value-targeted RV610-based products will carry the ATI Radeon HD 2400 name with Pro and XT models as well.

The entire AMD ATI Radeon HD 2000-family features the latest Avivo HD technology. AMD’s upgraded Avivo with a new Universal Video Decoder, also known as UVD, and the new Advanced Video Processor, or AVP. UVD previously made its debut in the OEM-exclusive RV550 GPU core. UVD provides hardware acceleration of H.264 and VC-1 high definition video formats used by Blu-ray and HD DVD. The AVP allows the GPU to apply hardware acceleration and video processing functions while keeping power consumption low.

Expect AMD to launch the ATI Radeon HD 2000-family in the upcoming weeks, if AMD doesn’t push back the launch dates further.
 
all I can say is thank god they removed the X from the front of the name. Way too many x's.
 
Other than the name they aren't really telling us anything we haven't already known for over a month. The 320 stream processors were confirmed a long time ago. Not really sure what AVP is supposed to be doing.
 
And when did "stream processor" become the new standard processing unit? I understood pipelines, pixel shaders and vertex shaders, but when did AMD start using nVidia terminology to describe its hardware? I don't buy it.
 
Probably back when they started relabeling R580 as a "Stream Processor" and selling it under that name. If anything Nvidia stole the naming from AMD. The fact that the cards are going unified and being used for more than just graphics lends well to the stream processor naming.
 
Either way, if this card is a beast or a failure its going to be one interesting card if all these rumors are true.

LoL, is this like the "Conroe" of videocards now? Although, it is pretty neat on how far we're leaping between generations... (ie, 9700, x700, x1950). I like how it says TWICE as many as 8800. haha

Unfortunately, according to the guys at Rage3D, the hardware on the card is supposed to be more optimized for DX10 games than legacy DX9 apps, so initial benchmarks may not seem that impressive. Once the next gen titles start being released, however, the card is supposed to blow away Nvidia's current offerings. One poster, I think it was either ShaidarHaren or SSXeon, estimated about a 70% performance lead over the 8800GTX in DX10 titles when running high levels of AA at higher resolutions. If ATI is able to pull off this level of performance, the card will be nothing short of revolutionary - especially if the price is $150 less than a GTX !

Sources who claim to have one (let's assume they do for a moment) claim that it will work with 2 6-pin power connectors plugged in. Between those two connectors and the PCI-E slot, a maximum of 225W can be delivered to the card. No card is going to draw the theoretical maximum power or there would be huge problems, so I would imagine draw is more like 200W. This is for the XT model that is allegedly in the wild. The 2 6-pin connectors rumor was going around a month or two ago as well.

So it will probably be >200, but not much >, certainly not to a point of being unreasonable.

As for the 320 stream processors, what a prime example of marketing semi-truths. Just like the oldest of R600 rumors said, 64 vec4's it is.

Yes, I agree, I think we will see a decent DX9 performance gain, but where the newer cards will really shine is in DX10 apps - and a vast improvement over nVidia's current offerrings.

Also remember that this is the 2900XT with 512 mb of GDDR3. Can't wait to see what happens when the 1GB GDDR4 part comes out. Also makes me wonder what nVidia's counter will be? G90 anyone? :D

I wonder how can anyone say that - 70% performance lead over the GTX in DX10 - when the GTX is being used for DX10 game development, since November ?

The XTX WILL be faster than the GTX, it has to be, since it's so late in the game. However, by the time it is launched, the GTX will be replaced by an improved version of G80, which is the card the XTX will try to compete with.

Don't count on the 70% lead, because that's simply not going to happen, though I'm sure the R600 extra memory bandwidth will be of good value, when increasing AA levels and resolution.
 
So Iam assuming these new R600 rumours are about the 65nm R600 and not the initial version which is supposed to be 80nm?
 
Developers having the 8800GTX for only 5 months is not going to make even the slightest difference in terms of performance. Games take years of Development and five months especially toward the end of a project like Crysis is not going to amount to anything.

Shair and Xeon are right about there being a HUGE difference in terms of sheer bandwidth of the R600 compared to the 8800GTX. With a 384bit bus there is no way Nvidia could even come close to the R600's 512Bit ring bus design.

So in games like Crysis that double bandwidth will be important.
 
only if the g80 is bandwidth contrained and if you clock the core of the g80 you get almost a 1 to 1 increase in performance, overlocking the memory doesn't yeild much performance benefits as of yet. So its more fillrate bound then anything else. And new games will stress fillrates and bandwidth more to what degree I'm not sure but this might still hold true at a later date.

It seems like the r600 is definitly held back by something, and if it isn't bandwidth, its either shader power or fillrates, or texture bound, so lets wait and see what that bottleneck is.
 
Holy crap! That's the first time I've ever seen official benchmarks be higher than the rumored ones. On paper this this will scream. I'll wait for benchmarks though.

It's funny though, about the long wait. Perhaps ATI isn't late some much as they're out of sync?

By the time this card gets out to market, Nvidia will have their 10 variants out. A 6-month head start is HUGE in terms of PC hardware scaling. Don't forget, ATI will have it's share of driver and vista issues to go through as well.

Sounds like a killer card non-the-less, however, the money will be made at the $200-300 level more than the flagship offerings from either company. ATI needs to release more cards that the average consumer can purchase before Nvidia steals the show.

Well I think in previous posts he said he has official design specs from AMD on his desk, just not the card yet.
 
I'm not going to comment on power consumption at load, but I thought I read some time back that R600 would have power saving features, in 2D, that were similar to modern processors. Not only would the clock speed be lowered in 2D mode, but portions of the chip that are not necessary in 2D mode could be disabled, thus lowering power output further.

Which is no doubt a very good feature, but keep in mind, we are talking about the high-end and no one in their right mind, buys a $500-$600 card, to wonder how power efficient it is, when it's in idle. It's the power it consumes under load, when it actually is showing what it can do in 3D, that steals the show, in the high-end.

thats true, but our pcs probably spend more time idling then they do in full, so lets say you are gaming for 4 hours of the day and idle for 20 hours?(idle in terms of 3d)

in full you use 240w
in idle you use lets say 80w(power saving features)

this could very well translate to the same or less over all power usage from

Full use 180w
and idle 140w

Why you leave your computer on 24/7? Just a waste of electricity... Idle usage for me is probably 300W right now. Full load is around 450W probably. (E6300 @ 1.96ghz(LOL), 8800GTS 625/900, 2GBs ram, 1 HDD, 1 CD/DVD drive)

I try to keep the power consumption down in my house as much as I can because of my power usage with the computer. Changed all my lights(almost, gotta go sell my cans to get some cash for teh lightz) to Compact fluorescent. I use windows(fucking huge) for my light a lot of the time too...so yeah. anyway R600 is going to be a big flop imo.

well because I'm usuall ydownloading something, or rendering, or just running my file server for the rest of the pcs on my network :p (main pc = file server, i know its not the greatest idea but saves space of adding another box)

Wouldn't that be bad for those of us that like to alt tab in games though? Even with my card that only switches cock speeds between 2d/3d, it still manages to screw up sometimes.
 
I'm in the same boat about power. I live in FL and the electricity costs are enormous. Cooling my condo takes a lot of energy. My roomy and I never had to turn on the heat during the winter, and our power bill dropped by half.

Higher wattage usually translates into more heat output. I just picked up an LCD the other day and I've already noticed that my room doesn't get nearly as warm (as I expected) while I work/play. I work at home, so I'm constantly using my computer during the day. Power consumption is a big issue for me. You'll fry here in Tampa!
 
Not an issue here in the UK - I use my PC and plasma TV for heating, bith get mighty warm :-D

If my full system usage is 400w under load (GTS, conroe at 3.5, watercooling, lots of other devices, Ethernet hub powered by PSU) your's isn't 450 under load ;)
 
In response to the Alt-Tab concern i would think that the drivers would be written in such a way that any direct 3d or Open GL applications main executable file would be logged into a resource pool(lets say injection into a encrypted .dll) resulting in said power saving functionality being disabled(even if you Alt-Tab) until that executable was released from the pool after its termination.

However i can not confirm this as i don't write the driver instruction sets for AMD(former ATi). :rolleyes:

Actually your full load is probably closer to 300 watts than 450 watts. In fact, it may even be around 250 watts or so. Check out the Power Supply Calculator at: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

I seriously doubt that R600 is going to be flop. Even though only on paper right now, it's shaping up to be a very promising video solution and it will be competitively priced as an alternative to Nvidia's offerings. The only problem I really foresee is yield. They might not be able to produce enough units to meet demand, especially if it ships at 65 nm, but you never know. AMD is almost certainly lending its expertise with the 65 nm process (if not its fabs) to help make it possible. We'll have to wait and see, I guess.
