Ok, I went with Puget systems.

Your setup is awesome, but wonder why only 2 gigs ram and 32bit vista? I would have went with 4gigs and 64bit. Especially if you are alot of highend stuff there. I have the killernic myself love that card btw.

Mostly, I was warned off of 64bit since it sounds like there is not good driver and/or app support for this as of yet. Is this not true? I figure I can always add more RAM later, and upgrade to Vista 64bit when the drivers situation improves.

This reminds me, I need to ask them to install a singe 2GB ram instead of 2 x 1GB, to make an upgrade easier and cheaper in the future.

So far, I've been very impressed with XFX motherboards--they've always made a pretty good video card, so the anticipation was that the motherboard would be up to the same standards.

We do indeed use a lot of Asus product, but we really like this board. It won guru3d's best hardware award.
 
I have the OEM 64 bit Vista Premium now and will not go back to the 32 bit version with my 4 Gigs of memory. Seems somewhat smoother, but that might just be the head talking and nothing to back it up.

Only driver I needed was for the printer and easy to obtain from online.
 
Did they recommend you stay with the 650w Power Supply since you are running SLI?

Im interested in feedback on that mirror case. I was tempted but I'm afraid of trying to maintain the finish.

Killer Nic. I like the looks of that but the cost was a bit high.

I'm liking what I see from Puget so far. Good luck with your new machine!

About the 64-bit driver issue...that's been one of those things that's kept a lot of OEMs from jumping on board, at least early on. There has been some apathy on the part of hardware manufacturers when it comes to releasing 64-bit WHQL drivers, especially for Vista, because the emphasis was solely on getting out stable 32-bit drivers for the majority of the consumer market.

Fortunately, that seems to be changing since demand for 64-bit operating systems has increased (mostly because everyone wants to use 8GB+ RAM). There are 64-bit drivers now available for most every piece of hardware on the market now, so in my opinion, 64-bit OS installs are not as scary as they used to be. We do them quite often here, with few repercussions post-production.

Send me your order number to heather@pugetsystems.com, and I'll place the note in the order re: the single 2GB stick. However, do remember--doing that, you're going to lose any advantage running dual channel will give you. Running single channel, you're going to be pushing through half the bandwidth that you would going dual channel (ie single channel=32, dual channel=64). You probably won't see a difference unless you're going to be doing a lot of heavy gaming or 3-D work, but I wanted to make sure you're aware.

The motherboards on the site are the ones we keep in regular stock, but that doesn't mean we won't use a motherboard of your preference instead. All you have to do is ask! ;)

We're pretty flexible when it comes to configurations, and we do special requests and orders all the time.

One difference that is really striking is that Velocity Micro is the only boutique that offers on-site service as part of their standard warranty. Although, I believe falcon northwest has on-site service but their prices are so ridiculous to even consider them.

I don't want to be out of business waiting for a replacement cdrom or whatever part to get replaced in 2+ weeks.

Has anyone had any experience with Velocity Micro's on-site service? Because its a huge selling point to me.
 
Just as a side note, we will offer on-site services as a function of the warranty, but only for some standard stuff--many of our computers are equipped with custom liquid cooled systems, and we prefer to work on them in house. For air-cooled systems, and systems that have minor repairs that need to be done...well, we will send out a tech for that. It's assessed on a case-by-case basis.

I'll let a VM representative comment on their current onsite plan--it's not really my place to do so anymore.:D

I am Heather's counterpoint at Velocity Micro and wanted to speak to our on-site repair policy. We do believe this is a great option for our customers and on-site service is available for most of our machines. The vast majority of repairs can be conducted as on-site with an authorized repair technician. Most of our customers love this option for support. In the interest of full disclosure there are times when we will still require a machine to come back in-house for repair and work with each customer to determine the best repair solution. We outline this in our warranty and repair guidelines. We are constantly reviewing and determining how we can strengthen our service to customers and this includes our warranty and on-site repair. The XFX MB is a nvidia reference board made by FoxConn anyway......just as the 680 reference boards were. I have a bunch of XFX stuff and have been very happy with their service and quality.

In fact, as soon as someone has an XFX 780i retail that doesnt cost a king's ransom above MSRP; I'm on it.

Just a few comments......
Dont worry about 64 bit Vista. I game on it almost exclusively and have done so since July. I have no problems. All you are worried about really is MB,video and sound......and I have had no problems with driver support......that dog is dead.
Why a "killer NIC"? do you game on-line alot???? If you dont, it's a really expensive paperweight. I have to say the "Killer" impresses me about as much as Aegia's Physics processor. Pure marketing hype. Take the money and use it for 2 more GB of RAM.

I game almost exclusively online... WOW, Eve, Battlefield 2, Company of Heroes, etc. When Age of Conan or Warhammer Online come out, I will be all over them as well.

There have been reputable 3rd party reviews that seem to indicate that the K1 performs as advertised. I hate lag, and am willing to pay to reduce it.

Anton, if you want to call in and talk directly to either William or Perry, they can walk through the build with you and answer any questions. They're both very, very technical guys and can get down into the weeds with you regarding performance or anything else you might have questions about.

Yes, we have a full line of laptops, including SLI systems...you're just going to have to rouse yourself and go take a look. :p
