hi
im getting a amd x2 3800, maybe the 4400 and the asrock 939dual mobo. I also will have a 6800gt agp, 2 HD's, a x-fi platinum, sony dvd-rom, a liteon cd burner and a gig of kingston pc3200 ram (512x2) in my computer. Is my Antec 380W psu powerful enough to run all this? and if its not, what would u guys recommend that would offer the best price/stability/performance? I also plan to overclock my vga and cpu.
thxs in advance

I just built an X2 4200 today (they were out of 3800's and the 4200 was only $80 more.) Using an A8V Deluxe with a 6600 AGP.

SWEEEEEEET!!!!! Intel can kiss my..... ahem.... anywho.... The 380W will be fine. I'm only using a 350W FSP on the bench and it's cruising along w/ no problems. But if you upgrade your board to PCI-e, an SLI capable board or do more hard drives, like a RAID3 or RAID5... or if you start experiencing hard locks or anything. I'd switch out... but I'm going to say you'll probably be perfectly fine.

im not going for an sli rig or putting any more HDD's in. So good to here that i will be fine w/ my psu cause i can't really afford a new one right now :(

Oh crap.. Thanks Dave. I forgot that they changed the specs on those about four times.

18A is kind of low. But again... its only a single AGP card, 2 HDD's, etc. I still think you'll be fine because those Antec's are like the FSP's I use... SERIOUSLY under rated. Just keep and eye on your 12V reading. Make sure she doesn't drop below 11.4. ;)

I still don't think so...

It's an AGP card. The only 12V it's getting is from it's auxillary connector and it's only getting 8A from that... at the most! The CPU itself really doesn't even use that much power, and when gaming.. when the video card is going to be under the most stress... the CPU is not going to be running instructions through both cores.

Now I wouldn't recommend this PSU, but since he already owns the 380W &
being an Antec TruePower even if it is too weak, all it will do is shut down.
It shouldn't damage his system, so why not give it a try?

well u guys know ur psu's and I don't. with that said I wont upgrade my psu but will get a more powerful one down the road in maybe 4-6 months. thanks for all ur input guys! :)

can't there be a draw of up to 1 amp on the 12V line from the agp card itself?

not like its gonna matter on his setup cause its sufficient but I thought the agp card used the 3.3, 5 and 12V lines

Yeah.. Pin 1 on an AGP card is a +12V pin, but I don't even think it's capable of 1A. It's usually used to provide power to the GPU fan and nothing more.

Natively, AGP cards are 3.3V or 1.5V. Even if they're fed 12V from an auxillary connector, they're then just regulated down to 1.5V (like how a CPU's voltage is regulated down from 12V.) And that concept of regulating such a high voltage to a lower voltage on the PCB itself is relatively new. Typically, through the slot, this voltage is regulated from the 3.3V rail.

Ive ran systems quite close to your rated power youll be drawing with an 18a 12v rail and its done fine. Thankfully, youve got a quality psu which wont let you down, if it were a different brand even with the same specs I might worry about you having some stability issues. I think youll be fine.
