I've read through the stickies and I hope I didn't just miss something. I'm looking to pick up a new PSU to go with my new (sorta, bits and pieces) system.

I've been looking at the Seasonic S-12 600 psu but at closing in on $170-180 depending on source, the PC Power and Cooling 510s begin to look reasonable. I can't, for the life me me, find any similar test beds to get a reasonable estimate of the noise, nor can I figure out the difference between the ATX, Deluxe, AG, XE, and the a/s/l models. If anyone has some pointers for a newb or a different good quiet psu, I'd appreciate any and all advice/flames/whatever really.

I'm going to be running:
4 x SATA drives (7200 RPM)
4 x 512 MB DDR 400 memory
2 x DVD RW drives
AMD 60 3800+ (not X2, it's an old part)
Asus A8N-SLI motherboard
XFX 7900 GT (newegg hasn't told me they sold out before my order, so I can hope)
Probably a sound card of some kind or other or something I guess.

Well, I just got the Seasonic 600watt S-12, and I can't say enough good things about it. I put this PSU in my HTPC, and it's by far the best supply I've used to date. The supply is incredibly quite (even compared to the Enermax Whisper II that it replaced), and seems to run much cooler. It's a very expensive PSU, but worth the money. I ended up finding it for 125 on a 8 hour sale, so I couldn't pass it up.

If you're looking for a quite PSU (but not quite as quiet as the Seasonic), the Enermax Whisper II was a great supply. You can get these from the 80-120 dollar range depending on how big you go. This supply was great for my HTPC, and I wouldn't have replaced it had I not found the deal on the Seasonic (and was in need of a new PSU for another rig).

As far as supplies that I can say I haven't had success with (I tried a number of PSUs for my HTPC before this), I would recommend staying away from the Antec and OCZ supplies. Our local computer outlet had various "quiet" models on the shelf, and all of them were unacceptable for my use. To boot, the prices of their quiet models were reaching that of the Enermax. I'm sure that they make solid supplies that will last, but I needed a dependable and quiet supply. Hope this helps a little bit...

etruscan,

The Seasonic S-12 series are very highly regarded... http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/07/11/stress_test/page24.html and http://www.silentpcreview.com/article247-page1.html should give enough background.

I personally found at least 3 other options cheaper than your original quote on the S-12 600:

1) http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=270&products_id=3154

2) http://www.frozencpu.com/psu-187.html

3) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817151025

This assumes you live in the US of course. And Sleeving and other mods would be extra.

I personally own both an S-12 600 and a Turbo Cool 510 Deluxe. Both are great, but the TC 510 is louder and more expensive.

Any chance you might be able to get away with the S-12 500? You probably would. Especially if you're not gonna OC. At $125 (NewEgg) it might be worth considering. Do the math. See if it makes sense. Good luck.
