New PSU doesn't work with my system??

Hey guys. So here is the deal... I decided to upgrade the video card in my pre-built HP machine. The model is an HPE-180t and I am replacing the GTX260 with a GTX560 Ti. I quickly discovered that I needed an additional PCI-E power cable and so I bought a new PSU to install. The new PSU is a Corsair TX650. After installing it I fired up the machine, but it fails to boot. Specifically, it seems like it is continuously trying to boot and failing over and over again every second. The power light on the case goes between blue (for on) and orange (like when in sleep mode). The fans are spinning except (except for the video card) and there is a quiet clicking noise every time it tries to boot. EVERY COMPONENT IS FUNCTIONAL ON ITS OWN, but the computer does not seem to want to function with this new PSU. I've reached the limits of my knowledge on the matter and I'm hoping someone out there might have a solution. Thanks in advance for your help.
 
There's a possibility that HP used it's own motherboard wiring scheme, and that the PSU is incompatible with it.

Use a molex to PCI-E adapter with the original power supply. If that power supply was enough to power a GTX 260, it should be enough for a GTX 560.

I also do not understand why you needed an additional PCI-E cable. Both the GTX 260 and the GTX 560 use two 6-pin PCI-E connections.
 
if the PSU you have for whatever reason has a 8 pin and an 6 pin pci-e power cable, if you look at the 8 pin pci-e power cable it has a little "wing" between the 6 pin and the extra 2 pins, if you are real careful you can cut into this wing a bit, and use it as a standard 6 pin pci-e by letting the 2 extra pins "hang" off the edge of the connector, the 2 extra pins are just grounding pins, just look at the 6 pin that is there, you should see the shape of each pin on the connector to know you are hooking the right ones up.

The reference 260 and 560 use 2x6 pin pci-e connectors, but there are some custom designed ones that used 6x1 and 8x1 connector, though that is very rare.

But, it is HP, dell and HP both are notorious as is Gateway for having propriety wiring designs, of course, and not syaing you are silly, but are you sure number 1 that you hooked everything up correctly, and number 2 the power supply you choose is giving proper power that is required such as 3v and 5v in the proper amounts, newer coolermaster power supplies seem to have this issue on some older motherboards as they do not give out the proper or at least the correct amount of these voltages "not used much anymore"

but yes, the GTX260 various models and the 560Ti use "around" the same power 170w and 186w TDP reference spec wise.

The GTX260 in my system does in fact use a single PCI-E connection in addition to a small jumper that plugs into the mobo. I'll try an adapter like you said.

I do not know if the new Corsair supplies enough on the 3v and 5v- I had only assumed it does as the computer is not all that old. I don't know much about voltage rails in PSU's- how would I go about finding out how much I power I need from each rail / how would I figure out if this is the problem?

I would just send an email to HP to ask them directly, provided you word it carefully or whatever, they may even have forums for this.

The only reason I brought up the 3 and 5v is, I have seen it on quite a few folks commenting on thier coolermaster PSU not powering thier older rigs up, cause they used older 3/5v and as such the "signal" was not given to supply the correct power from the PSU or some such thing.

I honestly do not know why, maybe just check the older power supply vs the newer one to see that at least "most" of the v are at least as good if not better, or, send an email forum post to HP directly in regards to the model you have, it could be something simple, or it could be as I mentioned, or like the other poster said "engineered" to have to use their parts(which wouldn`t surprise me in the least, and a good chunk of the reason why I build my own now)

Hopefully it can be sorted out, I do not know what else to say. are all the connectors plugged in proper such as the 24pin for the motherboard, 4 or 8 pin EPS connector(used to give extra power to the motherboard/cpu) etc, might just be something is not seated correctly?
 
Yea, I checked all the connections over and over and swapped out the old for the new multiple times always arriving at the same result.

Thanks again for the help- I'll check with HP and see what I can find out. I also have officially been turned off from brand name computers because of this- back to building my own systems.
 
yep, the thing is, not many of them like to use off the shelf parts, that can easily be changed, the only one possibly is Gateway, but dell and hp especially for a number of years have used more or less rebranded OEM style parts, its not that they are bad systems and overall are usually ok price, but, 99% of time are either unupgradable, locked to specific upgrades, or you can build your own for not much more and get alot more in return :)
