I got an AMD 6400+ just because, I installed it and the first time it booted fine but after running AquaMark the entire computer froze
When i was booting back up after the loading screen i got a blue screen, i was able to boot into safemode twice, i tried booting into Windows and got another blue screen
I tried some AS5 and i managed to boot again then after about 15minutes the computer just shutdown while i was typing something

here are all the temps i could possible find while the 6400+ chip was in:
http://www.hkills.net/untitled.JPG

and here are the same temps with the 4200+ chip in:
http://www.hkills.net/untitled2.JPG

if you dont want to tab between the pictures...(all temps are idle)
6400+
MotherBoard:51c
CPU:42c
Core1:42c
Core2:46c
GPU is always 58-60c

4200+
MotherBoard:39c
CPU:29c
Core1:34c
Core2:35c
GPU is always 58-60

i understand some might be a bit higher because of the chip change but i mean really?
its like all my temps went through the roof when i had the 6400+ in, the UPS box it came in looked like it came from ground zero
http://www.hkills.net/box/
i did a little editing in Paint and drew a nice circle where the CPU was sitting in the box

my question is, was the CPU damaged? would a damaged CPU cause every other temp to rise as much as they did? id guess and say a damaged CPU would cause blue screens? there is no visible damage on the chip or anything but what else could it be? i put the 4200+ in and i booted just fine and i have had zero errors/blue screens since i first got the 4200+ a few months ago

throwing this out there
i have a 650watt PSU(95%)/8800GTS 320, i think the 6400+ is 134watt?, 1 hardrive, and 1 CDROM, is 650watts not enough power?

i plan on sending the chip back to newegg and trying it again but id like to know i have enough power, i know my motherboard supports the 6400+ according to gigabytes website...i cant think of anything else

no i have not, should i pull the jumper?

ive never touched anything in the bios except the password, what should the voltage be at?
according to Everest:
Voltage Values
CPU Core 1.42 V
+3.3 V 3.25 V
+5 V 4.87 V
+12 V 11.84 V
+5 V Standby 4.89 V
VBAT Battery 3.06 V
DIMM 1.92 V
GPU Vcc 3.20 V
Core Voltage 1.100 - 1.450 V

ive had the chip in all morning and have not had a blue screen yet, i installed a new heatsink and used the fan from the old Volcano 12 and it seems to keep it down a bit (its not exactly cool in my room at the moment either)

I think it may be the chip or the heatspeader to be exact, its likely concave. Whether its damage in transit I'm not sure. I'd sit tight for a little while, check out the AMD forum and see if heatspreaders are an issue but if I'm honest: RMA.

I'd normally suggest lapping but with the question mark over transit damage its just not worth it.

The BIOS and temp program recognize the CPU????
The HSF is stock or aftermarket.
The HSF is seated properly??

Damn that shipping box was fucked-up. What did the retail cpu box look like???
Where do you live??? Is your UPS guy a closet field-goal kicker?

ive been a browser of this forum for a while, ive read a few lapping topics, it doesnt seem like something i even want to attempt, how long are RMA's on CPU's at newegg normally? 30 days or something?

the bios recognizes the CPU and temp, Everest/Coretemp/Speedfan all report the temp
i got a cheap 20$ heatsink from newegg along with the CPU, im never sure when it comes to heatsinks (i know i needed an AM2 socket) so i looked around till i found comments on the heatsink saying it works with the 6400+ so i ended up getting an arctic AC pro freezer 64, took the stock fan off and managed to put the Volcano 12 fan on it, when i first put the heatsink on(stock fan) i seriously could not touch it for more then 5 seconds, it was so hot...i can actually touch it for life now so

id say its seated properly, when i snapped the black clip to the right it tightened pretty good, it doesnt move at all when i give it a little shake
when i took it off the other night it took a bit of force/twisting/sliding to separate the heatsink from the CPU, is that good? im using AS5

the CPU box looked fine, there was a little skid mark on the plastic thing the CPU was in but who knows what that was, the box came from TN to Orlando (2 days), the UPS drivers and FedEx drivers drive like they are being chased by the cops around here, ive never seen the back of a UPS truck but judging by the box they forgot to strap my box down so when they hit those turns id bet a box containing 50 gold bricks bashed into my box

still think the motherboard temp is a little high, im starting to think its normal because of the CPU? jesus all this typing

Ask a mod to move your thread or bail into the AMD forum and ask, put AMD 6400+ Temps - Help! as your thread title, I know its strictly speaking a cooling issue but you'll get better more specific help in there than passing traffic in here.

How about you do nothing. Sure the processor is running hotter but it's still well within spec. You might want to pull the heat sink off and re-seat it but there is no reason to RMA. I think the problem is somewhere else besides the cpu. Try resetting the motherboard maybe.

well if a mod wants to move it then go for it, i figured this section gets more views

i was in a game frapsing a bit trying to get a blue screen and finally got one
i managed to see what the BSOD error was, atapi.sys, i found a forum and the poster said he disconnected his DVD drive then the error went from atapi.sys to sptd.sys which is related to Daemon Tools...i have DT installed and also the game i was playing requires the CD to be in the drive so i ISOed the game ages ago and i always keep it mounted with Daemon so ive uninstalled Daemon Tools (im completely lost now because i cant mount anything)

yeah Nam, im a little douche when it comes to temps...i knew they were going to run hotter but blah...im worried about the blue screens more then the temperatures at this point
