Help! The system I put together 3 months ago has died :( That's what I get for using an ECS board :eek: I don't have the time to rebuild and funds are limited $600 max. My video card seems ok. It's a Nvidia 6600le with 256mb of ram. I've been looking at these two systems:

Any advice would be appreciated!
 
I would go with the second one you listed...thats a PCIe 6600le, right? Otherwise you'll need a new video card no matter what you buy.

it's 400 dollars, has an athlon 3500+, a gig of ram, and a pci-e slot.
 
The 6600le is a PCI-E card. I know it's low end for Flight Simulator but like I said funds are limited. I prefer to go with a dual-core machine, since the machine that died had an Intel 920 processor.
 
Neither of those systems are worth the money. We haven't been terribly impressed with the majority of the Pentium D's we've had in the office. I'd be looking more at an AMD X2 or even a Core 2 E6300.

I would check at Best Buy - I think you'll find they have more up-to-date hardware for better prices than CompUSA.
 
Yeah, I think that's a better bet. Your LE will fit into that quite nicely.

We've been significantly more impressed with Gateway's build quality and support than we have HP/Compaq's.

If you can splurge another $100, I'd seriously consider this guy.
 
I was looking at that system as well, It will take me a couple of more weeks to raise that $100 but I think it might be worth it. My only concern is the system seems to be limited to availability. In Chicago, out of the six stores in my area only one has any stock.
 
If the meanest thing you plan to do with your computer is run FSX, you'll do fine with the X2 system. Core 2 is definitely nice, but not requisite for gaming. In fact, we're seeing a negligible difference in gaming performance between strong AMDs and Core 2's.

Either way, you're getting a decent system.
 
Update - I've just come back from BestBuy with the Gateway GT5238E. It's the Core 2 Duo system. I'll post my impressions later. I'm going to have to call microsoft and have them change the registration for FS to this system :(
 
-Another Update I've just installed FS X (had to call for activation) :) I happy with my purchase. I installed the video card. It was a little tight to install with the sata cable in the way. I think Gateway did a great cabling job though. I installed the two sticks of ram from the failed build and they seem ok. I have 2gb now. I think this system will satisfy me for least a couple of years. Thanks again
