My friend's HP Pavilion a720n has been giving us headaches for weeks. We installed a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB, which overheated (we bought an ATI Silencer) and was not getting enough power (we bought this FSP Fortron on the recommendation of [H]ardForum's PSU sticky). Now, as far as I can tell, we are back at square one....boo.

System Specs:
Athlon XP 3200 @ 2.2GHz
512MB DDR333 (the memory module is actually a PC3200 when I looked)
VIA KM400A Chipset and Motherboard
Radeon 9800Pro 128MB AGP 8x
No PCI cards installed
Onboard sound
USB mouse
PS2 keyboard
350w FSP Fortron PSU
DVD Writer/CD writer
CD-ROM drive
9-in-1 reader

Does your mobo even have a P4 connector?

Why did you choose you 350W, when you are using a 9800Pro?

What's wrong with that? 9800 Pros came from a time where PSUs in that entire range (350W up to 450W) came with 18A (or less) on the +12V. He could have a motherboard that powers the CPU off the +5V.
 
The mobo has a 20 pin and a four, but not one of the HDD style plugs. If the card is bad, a 9800 Pro is going to cost more than it's worth. Will this X800GTO not kill that PSU and run fine in a system with two optical drives, an AXP 3200, 512MB of single channel RAM, two fans, a 9-in-1 reader and a single IDE hard drive?
 
The PSU should be fine. You can check the rails with a DMM, but I have a feeling that something else is the source.

Everything, it's not the total wattage but the rails & I'm still not sure he has a P4 connector.

Why would I need a P4 connector with an AXP? The two 12v rails are 18 amps and 16 amps according to NewEgg's specs, but how do I tell which is the higher-amp rail to put the videocard on if I drop in a GTO?

Some AthlonXP boards use the P4 connector to power the CPU. It's just a part of specification.

12V2 is usually dedicated to the CPU only, you can't really choose (usually) where to put the loads.
 
So I have the 4 pin connector (which I assume is the P4 connector) and an additional four pin that is for 24 pin mainboards which I am not using right now. Is the X800GTO good to go on that PSU?
 
You know what had gone wrong? It had nothing to do with the PSU. One of the capacitors had been knocked ALMOST off the videocard. Not quite off. So my other friend found it and got it soldered back on. Everything works now.
