Hi everyone!

My brother and I just setup a new system for him... here's the spec's ...

VIA PB400-FL MB
Intel 2.8Ghz 533fsb
2*512 GB PC3200
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
120 GB Seagate EIDE
Zalman Raid-Max Case w/420W PS
Windows XP SP1

What we are experiencing is that his internet is WAY slow (on either my Comcast or his OpOnline)

He get's about 15K on 3DMark2001 (at stock speed--we got it up to 3.04@145x21 using Intel HSF)

In MSINFO32 we see that there are lot's of device IRQs that conflict.

We even tried disabling COM1/COM2/LPT1/USB1/USB2 so we can free up some IRQs.

I installed the VIA Hyperion 4.51, Catalyst (v4.7) from ATI, Latest VIA Audio, Latest Rhine III drivers.

Any ideas?? Manually assign IRQs in BIOS? Right now they are set to PCI Device

My internet started sucking for a little while and then I changed the NIC it went back to normal. Not sure what the problem was, but that fixed it. Actual results may vary.

Right, MSINFO32 shows that the Onboard NIC and the Onboard AUDIO are using the same IRQ. We tried to change it, but the dropdown is disabled.

We also tried the setting in the BIOS (PnP OS Installed = NO)

Well at least the internet isn't down.

What exactlly is slow, because it isn't the "internet"?

It's not the "Internet" but more accessing pages is like fetching @ 300 baud (for those who remember!).

I think the IRQ conflict between the Audio & NIC is causing this problem. But, they are both on-board and I dont have the ability to change the IRQ in XP Pro SP1 (control panel/system)

Try enabling ACPI in the bios. On my mobo, this gives each device its own IRQ.

It's already ON. We tried disabling it (changing it to Standard PC) also, but no dice!

I'm gonna try a new Ethernet (Intel PRO 100 PCI) card tomorrow. I'll disable the on-board LAN.

OK, there are a million reasons this could be happening, IRQ conflicts is waaaaay down on the list. Unlike older OSes 2k and XP can share IRQs with much greater success. Actually it almost always works. The few times it hasn't was because of software bugs. Jacking around with the IRQs of the video driver would help with crashes, but after patches this wasn't necessary (in other words it wasn't the OSes fault).

At this point you don't know if it's a network problem or if it's just an IE issue, I seriously doubt it's a hardware problem. How are your ping times to: google.com (by name and IP) to your ISP, and to your router?

Edit: have your tried reinstalling/updating the drivers for the NIC?

We updated the AUDIO drivers and the Rhine III LAN Drivers. I know that sometimes, even though the IRQs are shared, they are really gateways to the other 240 virtual IRQs that IRQ Steering provides. Ping and Traceroutes are fine < 40ms (www.google.com)

And strangely, fetching the pages is WAAAAYYYY slow, but if/when I click on a file to download... bang! 300 KB/s transfers! Sooo strange!

So it's not even the network connection but browser rendering... This isn't a NIC/OS issue, it's an IE/HTTP problem.

Try downloading an alternative browser like firefox to test.

edit: have you scanned for spyware?

I would think that your hardware config is fine. I haven't had to manually configure IRQ's for years. The worst IRQ confilict I have had lately is a PCI video card not working when plugged into the first PCI slot, which prevented XP from booting into the GUI. Changing the card to another PCI slot fixed it right up.

I think the computer has spyware and/or viruses installed. Download adaware and spybot. You go into IE's connection settings and make sure he doesn't have a proxy setup. Also delete all the objects under "Tools">"Internet Options">"Settings">"View Options"

Guys, thanks for all your great input.... however, this is a brand-spankin new setup. All the machine has is XP SP1, NAV 2004, Office XP

I will revert back to ACPI HAL and see how things go. Either way, I am also going to try a PCI NIC (just in case)

I will try tonight and post my results!
:) :) :)

I used a 802.11g USB2 adapter and it work like a champ! Dunno what's wrong with the system (neither addon Enet nor onboard work as they should) Everything else onboard works fine (6 USB2, 2 firewire, AGP, audio,IDE)

Can't RMA :-( But it will do for now.... Athlon64 X2 is around the corner!
